"Okay," Zoe said, then walked straight to the elevator.
Emmett quickly followed her, and suddenly, something clicked in his mind.
He couldn't help but sigh. Zoe might be powerful and in a high position, but she was still a teenage girl at heart. No matter how busy she was, love always came first for her.
As Zoe stepped out of the building, she spotted the familiar Jeep parked outside.
Shawn jumped out as she walked over and came to stand in front of her. "Get ready—we're leaving tonight."
Zoe wasn't surprised. "How did you know I'd say yes?"
Shawn looked into her eyes. "I can read your mind. You believe that?"
Zoe rolled her eyes. That was such a lame joke. Tough guys like Shawn weren't made for telling jokes.
She gave a little shiver and said, "I just didn't want people saying my man doesn't keep his promises."
Shawn nodded. There was a soft smile in his eyes. He liked hearing her call him my man.
Shawn brought Zoe home to pack her things.
Because Zoe had turned her down earlier, Clara wasn't exactly thrilled to see her. But when she saw Shawn, her attitude changed instantly—full-on smiles and fake warmth.
Even though Zoe hadn't agreed to help Eunice, Clara believed Shawn wouldn't say no. After all, he was going to be her son-in-law someday.
As soon as Zoe went upstairs to pack, Clara rushed over to Shawn, ready to ask for his help to get Eunice out of prison.
But Shawn cut her off immediately. "Clara, I know you're Zoe's mom, but you're being way too biased. Zoe might not mind—but I do. I won't let anyone hurt or set up my girlfriend."
Clara gave an awkward laugh. "What are you talking about? I'm her mother. Why would I ever hurt her?"
"Oh really? If it were up to me, anyone who tried to hurt Zoe would be dead already." Shawn was not someone to mess with. He only went easy on Zoe.
Now, even Clara, as shameless as she was, didn't dare say another word.
"Mrs. Evans, didn't you say you wanted to tell me something?" Shawn's tone turned calm again.
Clara quickly shook her head. "N-no, I was just asking if you wanted some water."
She rushed off to the kitchen to get a drink. She never imagined Shawn could be even colder than Zoe. Those two were clearly made for each other—so stubborn.
Zoe came back downstairs with her bag. When she saw how strangely quiet Clara was, she figured Shawn must've done something. But she didn't care.
As long as Clara didn't make a fuss, Zoe was happy for the peace and quiet.
Shawn took the travel bag from Zoe and held her hand as they walked out of the Evans residence.
Right then, Zoe's five brothers came back home.
These past few days, they had been avoiding Zoe at home just to dodge the awkwardness. When they saw her and Shawn walking out with luggage, they panicked.
Charlie rushed over and snatched the bag from Shawn. "Zoe, I know we let you down, but you can't just run away like this."
Sean stepped up too. "We've been trying to fix things between us. We just want things to go back to how they used to be. Can't you give us a chance to make it right?"
Herbert, Jacob, and Gerald were even more direct—they formed a human wall to block her way.
Charlie was so anxious, he almost cried. "Zoe, please don't be mad anymore, okay? We're really sorry. Just tell us what we have to do for you to forgive us."
Zoe was silent. She didn't understand why everyone suddenly thought she was running away. She didn't think she gave off such fragile vibes.
