Charlie, seeing that Zoe still wasn't speaking, said, "I know I messed up. I'm apologizing now. And you guys—what are you waiting for? Say sorry, or she's gonna leave for good!"
Charlie's sadness and panic seemed to spread to the others. They were literally about to bow to her.
Zoe couldn't take it anymore. "Stand up straight!" she shouted.
Her brothers immediately stood up straight like soldiers.
Zoe stared at them coldly. "What's wrong with you guys? Every time you see me, you just apologize nonstop. What are you, cowards?"
Her brothers looked kind of embarrassed.
"I'm not running away," Zoe said. "I'm just going out of the country with Shawn for work."
Charlie finally let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, that's all? You scared the hell out of me."
"This is your fault, Charlie. You scared all of us," Herbert muttered.
Charlie scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed. "Zoe hasn't really been talking to us lately, so I got a little nervous."
"Zoe, we were actually planning a surprise for you today. We wanted to fix things between us," he said. "Since you're leaving now, I guess we'll just show it to you early."
Zoe was curious. "What surprise?"
Charlie walked behind her and covered her eyes. "Come with me. No peeking."
Shawn let go of her hand, quietly stepping aside to let Zoe enjoy this moment with her family.
Charlie led Zoe all the way to the garage.
"You can open your eyes now," he said.
Zoe opened her eyes and saw a red, customized sports car sitting in front of her.
She hadn't driven it yet, but just from the look of it, she could tell every part on it was top-tier. Even in an international race, this car would be considered premium-level.
"This is our gift to you. Do you like it?" Charlie asked.
Zoe liked the color red. And now, seeing this flashy car, she felt like it was a perfect match for her.
But she couldn't resist teasing Charlie a bit. "Charlie, you sure this wasn't meant for you?"
Charlie's face turned red. "Of course not! We all pitched in, and I personally had it custom-built for you. Only a genius racer like you deserves a car like this. It'd be a waste on me."
Everyone burst out laughing. Zoe laughed too.
Even though it was just a car—and not even as good as the ones she'd modded herself—the effort and sincerity her brothers put into it melted that last bit of resentment she had left.
Everyone would make mistakes. She couldn't stay cold forever just because her brothers had once failed to see the truth. At least now, they were genuinely trying to make things right. That was worth giving them another chance.
On the way to the airport, Zoe kept turning the car key over and over in her hand.
She was in a great mood, a soft smile playing at the corners of her lips. Shawn couldn't stop sneaking glances at her.
"Why are you staring at me? Eyes on the road," Zoe said.
"I guess I was worried for nothing," Shawn said. "Looks like you made up with your family."
Shawn had always been concerned about Zoe's relationship with her family. He could tell that, even though she acted carefree, she cared deeply about family. Otherwise, she wouldn't have brushed off Eunice's repeated mistakes so lightly.
But the Evans family had never seen Zoe's hurt or her tolerance. Instead, when she finally refused to forgive, they called her cold and heartless.
Mistakes could be forgiven—but not every mistake deserved it.
Zoe turned to Shawn and said, "My relationship with them was bound to end someday."
"What about me?" Shawn asked seriously, stopping the car as he spoke. He didn't think she was joking.
