She had just laid down when she suddenly heard faint noises inside the room.
Zoe's eyes snapped open. When she saw someone climbing in through the window, a cold glint flashed across her face.
She hadn't expected Shawn to be right—someone really had come to assassinate her this soon. Zoe wasn't sure who sent them, but she figured it must have something to do with the two people who had tailed them earlier.
Three intruders had climbed in through the window, all armed, clearly intending to kill her on the spot.
Zoe kept her eyes closed, pretending to be asleep.
Just as the three men reached her bedside and raised their weapons to shoot, Zoe suddenly flung her blanket over them.
Muffled thuds came from underneath the blanket. The gunshots had been silenced, and the added layer of the blanket made the sounds even softer.
Nothing from inside the room alerted Shawn outside. Zoe had no intention of alarming anyone anyway.
While the blanket obstructed their vision, she landed powerful punches on all three, knocking them out cold.
It all happened so fast. When Zoe pulled the blanket away, she got her first good look at the attackers.
They were all foreigners. Upon inspection, Zoe judged them to be ordinary hitmen. However, none of them had any identification.
Zoe didn't want to keep them in her room any longer. She went to open the door to call someone to deal with them—but the moment she opened it, she found Shawn standing there.
The sound of the door opening had woken him immediately. "Are you okay?" he asked.
Zoe had clearly turned down his offer to stay and protect her, yet he had remained outside all this time. Just knowing that touched her deeply.
She grabbed him by the sleeve, pulled him into her room, and shut the door.
Unbeknownst to them, Sophia had been spying on them through the peephole of the room across the hall. Just imagining Zoe and Shawn possibly doing something unspeakable behind that door made her want to storm in right then and there.
But she couldn't. Rick had made it clear—Zoe and Shawn must never find out she was here. Otherwise, she would've barged in the moment he stepped inside.
Zoe pinned Shawn against the wall. "You're really this worried about me?"
"You're my girlfriend. It's my responsibility to keep you safe," Shawn replied without hesitation.
Zoe let out a soft chuckle. "I honestly don't even know what to say to you... So maybe I'll just show you instead."
With that, she leaned in and kissed him.
Just as Shawn was about to respond, someone suddenly charged at them.
It was one of the three attackers—he had regained consciousness. Upon seeing Zoe and Shawn kissing, he lunged forward, trying to kill Zoe.
Sensing the danger, Shawn immediately pulled Zoe aside and reversed their positions, pinning her against the wall instead. In the same motion, he lashed out with a swift side kick, sending the attacker hurtling toward the window.
If the glass hadn't been reinforced, the man might have gone straight through and fallen from the building. As it was, he landed in a heap by the window, looking completely disheveled.
Zoe pushed Shawn away. He then noticed the other two assassins, who had also started to stir.
"Why didn't you call me when this happened?" he asked, his tone stern.
"Why would I bother you with something I can handle myself?" Zoe replied, her voice cool. She had always been used to handling problems on her own, and Shawn's questioning felt unnecessary to her.
Shawn took a deep breath, knowing he couldn't be angry with her. She'd suffered too much in the past, and it wasn't her fault that she didn't trust others.
But from now on, she had him. And Shawn was determined to earn Zoe's trust and become the one she could finally lean on.
