Bruce had once wrongly blamed Zoe, and ever since the White family suddenly extended an olive branch, he had always felt both flattered and uneasy.
Zoe's personal call only confirmed Bruce's suspicions. Clearly, the White family was trying to use them for some hidden agenda.
Between his own daughter and outsiders, Bruce knew better than to lose his head, money-minded as he was.
He said smoothly, "My apologies, everyone. I just remembered we have an urgent family matter to attend to. We'll have to take our leave now. Let's catch up another time."
Eric stood up to persuade them. "Lunch is almost ready. Why not stay and eat before you go?"
Bruce waved his hand firmly. "I'm sorry, but it is quite urgent. We wouldn't want to impose any longer."
"An urgent family matter? I didn't even know about it. At least let's stay for lunch," Clara protested, still engrossed in her lively conversation with Anna and clearly reluctant to leave.
Sean stepped forward and gently helped Clara up. "Mom, don't you remember? We're going to visit Eunice."
Clara's heart was always with her daughter, but the family had strictly forbidden her from visiting.
Now, upon hearing they were going to the prison, she stopped protesting and promptly followed her husband and sons out of the White residence.
Meanwhile, Zoe fixed her gaze on Shawn, clearly in a foul mood.
Zoe grabbed Shawn by the tie, yanking him down so they were eye to eye. She hissed, "You'd better find a way to calm me down, or I swear I'll tear the White family apart when I get back."
Shawn fixed his gaze on Zoe, his expression grave. "If they've truly done anything, you won't have to lift a finger. I'll personally make them pay."
"You'd better mean it," Zoe shot back. To vent her frustration, she pulled Shawn in for a punishing kiss, and then she bit down hard.
Shawn's pupils contracted slightly from the pain. When their lips finally parted, his lip was already bleeding from her bite.
Zoe leaned in, her tongue slowly tracing the blood from his lips, not stopping until every drop was gone. Only then did she finally let him go.
Shawn took a moment to steady his breathing when his phone buzzed with a notification.
He glanced at the screen. It was a message from Sean confirming the Evans family's safe return.
Shawn showed Zoe the text so that she knew they'd made it home safely.
The chill in Zoe's eyes finally began to fade. She gave Shawn a defiant look and said, "Don't think I'll forgive you so easily."
'When Shawn found out about this, he should've told me right away instead of keeping it from me. After all, it's my family involved. He had no right to hide it,' Zoe thought.
Shawn realized his mistake right away and quickly caved in. "It'll never happen again, I swear."
"If you dare pull that stunt again, I'll make sure you know what it's like to be a nervous wreck." Zoe threatened. In truth, she wasn't really mad at Shawn; once she'd calmed down, she realized just how much he truly cared for her.
Looking back, Shawn's decision to keep silent and leave her in the dark was honestly such a cowardly move.
He took all the blame, let everyone call him a heartless playboy, and never once tried to defend himself. Given his status, it must have been truly difficult for him.
Zoe took a deep breath, deciding to forgive Shawn. With a teasing smile, she said, "Mr. Ludwig, the waltz music has started. Aren't you going to ask me to dance?"
Shawn was still racking his brain for a way to calm Zoe down when, to his surprise, she offered him an olive branch.
Shawn immediately extended his hand like a gentleman. "May I have this dance, beautiful lady?"
