Zoe sped down the deserted streets. Even in this exclusive district, past midnight, only the most extravagant clubs still blazed with neon lights.
Occasionally, a few drunks could be seen staggering along the roadside, clutching liquor bottles—whether they were homeless or simply enjoyed this vagrant lifestyle, no one could tell.
They returned to the Universal Tower together, only to discover a curfew in effect. For the residents' safety, no one was allowed in or out after 2 a.m.
"Mr. Ludwig, looks like we'll have to sleep on the streets tonight," Zoe joked.
'Should've known better than to leave that love hotel. We could be lying in a comfy double bed right now, ready to watch the sunrise together,' she thought.
Shawn grabbed Zoe's hand. "There must be hotels nearby. Let's find somewhere else to stay."
Zoe had the same thought. They got in the car and drove off to look for a place to stay.
Several cars began tailing Zoe and Shawn's vehicle. To maintain stealth, the pursuers rotated vehicles at each intersection, making their surveillance virtually undetectable.
Zoe and Shawn noticed that the cars following them kept changing, and some even drove ahead. Clearly, this wasn't a tail.
Feeling relieved, they started looking for a hotel to stay at. And surprisingly, there was one nearby with its lights still on.
They got out of the car and walked straight in. Soon after, several stealthy figures silently surrounded the place.
One of Aileen's men reported over the phone, "Ms. Carleton, we just saw them enter the hotel you arranged."
Aileen was hooking up with a hunk when her phone rang. She immediately shoved him off, still panting, and demanded, "Is everything ready inside?"
"Yes, Ms. Carleton, you're truly brilliant. Having our people pretend to be doormen and block their entry at Universal Tower was a stroke of genius. Otherwise, they might not have ended up at the hotel we arranged for them so easily," said the man.
Aileen sneered, "Naturally. Don't forget who you're dealing with. Keep a close watch and follow my plan to the letter. Got it?"
The man replied, "Yes!"
The man who had been making out with Aileen reached for her again, but Aileen shoved him away and snapped, "Get lost! The man I like is still waiting for me to grace him with my favor. Now scram!"
Aileen quickly slipped into the bathroom to shower and change, her heart racing with anticipation as she waited for the night's drama to unfold.
Zoe and Shawn approached the front desk to check in. As they went through the formalities, Zoe noticed the hotel was eerily quiet—not a single other guest in sight.
'Is everyone really asleep at this hour? That's totally unlike Merilunia's nightlife habits,' she thought, suspicion rising.
"Sorry, we only have two single rooms left," the receptionist said.
"Then we'll each take a room," Shawn said, pulling out his credit card.
The receptionist swiftly completed the check-in and handed them their key cards. To their surprise, their rooms were on different floors. 'Somewhat odd,' they thought.
But it was getting late, and they really did need to find somewhere to rest.
Zoe glanced at Shawn's room number and said with a smile, "If anything comes up, I'll come find you."
Shawn had actually considered suggesting that he and Zoe share a room. After all, if anything happened, they could watch each other's backs.
But he figured that might make her uncomfortable, given their different genders. Now that Zoe said she'd come find him in his room if she needed anything, he decided the best thing to do was just wait for her there.
Zoe went out of the elevator on the 13th floor, while Shawn rode up to the 16th.
Zoe stepped into the room and found it was indeed a single—cramped enough that it would be too tight for two.
