When Shawn looked at Zoe, his vision was completely impaired. Everything swam before his eyes, a blur of countless overlapping shadows, like being drunk.
Shawn shook his head unsteadily, his voice strained as he growled, "Go, Zoe. I don't want to hurt you."
"You don't want to hurt me? Then am I just supposed to stand here and watch you suffer like this?" Zoe demanded.
Zoe wasn't some blushing maiden who'd shy away at the sight of a man's bare chest. What she saw was the agony Shawn was desperately trying to suppress.
This potent drug wreaked havoc on the body. If they didn't find a way to neutralize its effects soon, it could damage his vital organs. That would be disastrous.
Zoe jumped down from the sink and kept pushing Shawn back until he was right under the showerhead. A blast of icy water gushing from above drenched them both to the bone once again.
The icy water no longer affected Shawn. His consciousness was fading, and he couldn't feel hot or cold at all. But for Zoe, the icy water only made her more alert. She knew exactly what she was doing.
Meanwhile, Shawn's mind was a complete mess, the drug wreaking havoc on his senses. Just staying on his feet took everything he had. Remembering who he was or what he was supposed to do was out of the question.
Zoe cupped Shawn's face in her hands, staring intently into his eyes. "Look at me. Who am I?" she demanded.
Shawn strained to see the figure before him, but the multiple overlapping images made it impossible to discern anything more than a vague human silhouette.
He couldn't make out any facial features or identify who it was. To make matters worse, the darkness would've made it nearly impossible to recognize anyone, even under normal circumstances.
Zoe frowned. 'He's completely out of it,' she thought. She closed the distance and kissed Shawn deeply.
As their lips met, she slipped a pill from her mouth into his.
The wax-sealed pill was a life-saving measure Zoe had prepared for herself, just in case. She never thought she'd need it in this lifetime, yet here was Shawn, ending up taking it in the most unexpected way.
The pill could temporarily suppress the toxins raging through Shawn's system, giving him a brief window of clarity.
But if Zoe wanted to completely rid Shawn of the drug's ravages, she'd have to resort to the oldest remedy in the book.
Shortly after taking the pill, Shawn felt his mind clear up.
But as soon as he took in their compromising position, he quickly grabbed a bath towel from the rack, wrapped it around Zoe, and moved to push her out of the bathroom.
Zoe glared at him and said, "I didn't bring you back to your senses just so you could kick me out. I want you to really see who I am."
"I-I can't make love with you in such a situation. Get out." Shawn resisted with every fiber of his being.
Zoe stared at him. "I don't care, so what's your problem? Or am I not good enough for you? Fine, I'll just find you another woman. How about that chaebol heiress?"
At her words, Shawn cupped Zoe's face and pulled her into a fierce, passionate kiss. But this kiss was merely Shawn's way of proving his true feelings—it wasn't about taking advantage of Zoe.
As he released her, Shawn's forehead came to rest against hers. Their bodies pressed close, yet both maintained an almost painful restraint.
Shawn panted heavily, his forehead still pressed against hers. "Does this prove how I feel about you? Go now. I'm afraid I might do something unforgivable to you. I could never live with myself if that happened."
"Are you really looking out for me, or are you just afraid you'll back out later?" Zoe shot back. She was ready. If Shawn dared to say the latter, she'd punch him in the face.
"I can't sleep with you without your full consent. And, I want our first sex to be on our wedding night, when everything is official and right," Shawn said, his tone gentle but resolute.
