Terry stopped her. "Ms. Evans, please don't leave so soon. Won't you tour the departments before you go?
"We could definitely expand this project portfolio, and since the company is planning to enter several new markets, we'd really value your input."
Zoe said, "I have full confidence in you running the company. Just email me if anything comes up." With that, Zoe turned and headed for the elevator.
Terry insisted on escorting her personally, but Zoe declined. She didn't want to make a scene or draw attention. Being the talk of the town was the last thing she needed.
Zoe emerged from the elevator completely alone. As expected, her appearance went completely unnoticed.
In a crowd, Zoe was just another unfamiliar face—at most, someone vaguely connected to the Wadden Group, but nothing more.
Just as Zoe reached for the glass door to leave, she came face-to-face with a familiar figure. Their eyes met at the same instant.
Aileen's eyes widened in shock when she spotted Zoe. "You? What the hell are you doing here?" Her face instantly flushed with rage.
For a moment, Aileen was tempted to have the two bodyguards behind her give Zoe a good beating. But she managed to hold back.
Even with all those bodyguards before, none could lay a finger on Zoe, showing she was no pushover. But this time Aileen came prepared, maintaining a measured composure.
Aileen glared at Zoe and snapped, "So, I finally found you."
Zoe met Aileen's gaze in silence.
Aileen clearly had no intention of letting Zoe get a word in.
With a contemptuous sneer, she made it obvious she was here to pick a fight. "Ah, so that's why you're so cocky? Just a small-time manager at Wadden Group.
"You think that little title gives you the right to be so arrogant? Forget about you—even Terry, the CEO of Wadden Group, has to bow to me when he sees me."
Many in the crowd recognized Aileen immediately. Especially, the receptionist, spotting Aileen's arrival, immediately rushed over with fawning enthusiasm. "Ms. Carleton, what brings you here today?"
Aileen shot her an icy look and said coldly, "I'm here to teach someone who doesn't know their place a lesson."
Aileen snapped, "Guards, teach them a lesson." Instead of ordering her guards to attack Zoe, Aileen had them go after innocent bystanders.
Aileen stood aside, watching the scene unfold with cruel amusement, and sneered, "Listen up, all of you. Today, you're taking this beating for her.
"This woman right here is the one to blame for your beating. If you want payback, take it out on her."
One by one, the beaten employees turned to glare at Zoe, their eyes burning with resentment.
They were completely innocent, yet got beaten up for absolutely no reason.
Aileen sneered at the crowd and said, "I heard she's one of your managers. Do you really think someone like that deserves to keep her job?
"If you insist on keeping her, I'll come back with my people every single day to make a scene. Let's see how long you all can keep working when you're getting beaten up every day because of her."
Aileen was downright vicious. She deliberately stirred up the crowd to make Zoe the scapegoat.
"Who the hell are you, anyway?"
"Just quit already."
"This is all on you. We got beaten because of you."
"Pay for our medical bills."
"Call Mr. Davis now to fire her."
Many of the beaten employees finally snapped and began to fight back. They weren't about to put up with this kind of injustice just because of one colleague.
If Zoe had even a shred of guilt, she'd step up and take responsibility for the consequences right now.
This was exactly what Aileen wanted, using the other employees' safety as leverage to force Wadden Group into firing Zoe outright.
With Zoe out of support, Aileen could finally do whatever she wanted to her.
Zoe thought to herself, 'Huh, I have to admit, Aileen's actually smart, coming up with a dirty trick like this. Too bad it won't work on me.'
Upon seeing Zoe smirk in the face of the crowd's vicious abuse, Aileen's fury boiled over. She thought angrily, 'Time to show her what's what.'
