The color drained from Aileen's face. She thought, 'So if we lost Wadden Group as a partner, our family would get destroyed? Seriously?'
In the span of a heartbeat, her fear hardened into hate. She wondered, 'And I'm just supposed to let Zoe walk away like this? Hell no. I'm gonna make that bitch pay if it's the last thing I do.'
But Aileen knew better than to let any of that show on her face. She'd find her own way to get back at Zoe and settle the score for today.
Zoe was driving back to Universal Tower when her car suddenly went haywire halfway there.
The steering went out. The brakes were shot. And the accelerator was jammed. Zoe couldn't even shift gears, and with the gas pedal stuck, the car kept racing at a dangerously high speed.
Most people would've been pissing themselves by now. One wrong move, and she was just a smear on the pavement. Zoe couldn't believe someone had been this thorough. They'd sabotaged everything that mattered in her ride.
A massive truck was coming straight at her, so Zoe had to bail. Right before impact, she popped the door, flipped onto her car's roof, then launched herself onto the truck's cargo bed like some action movie star.
Her car slammed into the truck, making it wobble sideways. Zoe crouched low and kept her balance.
The truck driver wrestled his rig to a screeching halt, tires smoking. Her car was completely totaled, which looked like a crushed tin can.
Zoe leaped down from the truck, ready to get out of there. But before she could move, several cars appeared out of nowhere, tearing toward her from different directions. This wasn't random. It was a kill box, and she was the target.
Zoe didn't move an inch. She could see the panicked faces in the growing crowd of onlookers. If she ran, they would get caught in the crossfire. So she stood her ground as the cars barreled down on her.
A scream erupted from the crowd. "Holy shit, they're gonna run her down!"
"It's a goddamn assassination," another voice yelled.
"That poor girl..." someone whimpered, already praying.
At the very last second, Zoe dropped and rolled under the truck. The cars hit their brakes hard. It was no point smashing into a truck when their target was gone.
The cars screeched to a halt just inches from the truck. Doors flew open, and a bunch of armed men piled out and immediately dropped to check under the trailer.
But they found nothing. The space under the truck was empty. Confusion rippled through the assassins, and they couldn't believe they lost one person in plain sight. It was as if she had some Harry Potter invisibility cloak or something.
But Zoe didn't vanish into thin air. While those assassins were crawling around under the truck, Zoe had quietly slipped into one of their cars. She floored the gas pedal and sped away, leaving them standing in the middle of the road.
"Shit, she stole our car. Get after her!" an assassin yelled.
They scrambled back to their remaining vehicles and tore after her. Zoe dumped the car in some dead-end lot. By the time her pursuers found the empty vehicle, she was a ghost.
The head assassin grabbed his phone and called his employer. "Ma'am," he said, "we lost the target."
"Fucking idiots." The voice on the other end was ice-cold fury.
Then Zoe came out of nowhere like a horror movie. These assassins never saw it coming. She knocked every single one flat on their backs.
Just before the leader ate dirt, she yanked his phone away and spoke right into it. "Who are you? What's your deal with trying to kill me?"
The woman on the other end hung up the moment she heard Zoe's voice. Zoe stuffed the phone in her pocket. Maybe she could trace this back to the source.
Meanwhile, in a pitch-black room, Eunice was still trying to steady her panicked breathing. She was the one who had hired the assassins.
