Since he was gonna keep digging, Zoe threw him a bone. "It was Fox. I'm his biggest fan."
Shawn just nodded, not even trying to hide his smirk. He didn't believe her for a second. Zoe fell silent, feeling a familiar flush of exposure. It was their game, this dance of secrets and unspoken truths.
Then three gunshots cracked through the air. A car came screaming toward them head-on, aiming straight at Zoe in the driver's seat.
Bullets punched right through the windshield. Zoe jerked her head just in time. The shot barely grazed her cheek.
But the next two were kill shots—one aimed for her heart, the other for the space between her eyes. This wasn't some random street violence. This was a professional hit.
Zoe cranked the wheel hard, throwing the car into a perfect 180-degree spin. The bullets that would have killed her instead slammed into the car's body, leaving deep, ugly dents in the metal.
That was Shawn's cue. As Zoe straightened the car out, he launched himself through the open passenger window and onto the roof in one fluid motion.
The assassins immediately turned their guns on Shawn, but hitting him was impossible. Zoe sent the car into a wild pattern, weaving like a snake and making every single bullet miss its mark.
The assassins grew desperate. They couldn't predict her moves. She was pure, calculated chaos on wheels.
While they were scratching their heads trying to track her moves, Zoe was reading their shots like a crystal ball.
Split second before they fired, she already knew exactly where each bullet was headed and got them out of the way. Most people would've been dead ten times over.
Zoe's magic behind the wheel kept Shawn balanced like he was standing on concrete. When she brought them close enough to the killers' ride, he jumped ship and landed on their roof.
They heard the solid thump above them and knew. They immediately opened fire, riddling the roof of their own car with holes. Bullets tore through the metal but barely tickled Shawn.
Anyway, the slugs had lost too much velocity punching through the sheet metal. They were slow, easily dodged. At that speed, Shawn could have snatched them out of the air.
While these idiots were shooting at the ceiling, Shawn kicked out a side window and dove inside. There were three of them: a driver and two shooters.
Shawn was barely through the window when he twisted the back shooter's neck like a bottle cap. When the front shooter tried to draw on him, Shawn had already grabbed his gun and turned it around.
That left the driver, who figured he'd try his luck. Unfortunately, now he had Zoe to worry about.
Zoe slammed her car straight into the front bumper of the killer's ride. At that speed, the driver either moved or became street pizza. He yanked the wheel hard and tried to bolt.
Zoe didn't give him the chance. The second he started turning, she hammered the gas and T-boned their passenger side. The whole car went airborne and rolled like a dice.
Zoe was out of her car in a flash, racing toward the wreck to pull Shawn out. He was already launching himself through a shattered window. They crashed into each other and rolled across the pavement together.
"You alright?" they both said the instant they stopped rolling.
Zoe was on her feet first, offering a hand to Shawn. He took it without hesitation, and she hauled him up. They stared at the smoking wreck, both looking grim.
"Who were they after? You or me?" Zoe asked.
Shawn looked from the wreck to her. "Both of us, I'm thinking."
They believed this wasn't the crew of killers they'd let walk away before. Someone new wanted them dead.
"Let's grab one alive for questioning," Zoe said.
