Zoe strode toward the door, her voice cool and commanding. "Wait for my signal."
She was telling Dimitri and his men to hold their positions—no one could move until Zoe gave the command.
"Absolutely. I'll be standing by for your command," Dimitri responded immediately.
Zoe stepped out, spotted Shawn leaning casually against the wall, and walked over to join him.
"Mission accomplished?" he asked.
"Yep," Zoe said.
"Then let's go," Shawn said, naturally reaching out to take Zoe's hand.
They walked hand in hand like any ordinary couple, but what they were about to do was anything but ordinary.
Before coming here, Shawn had already scoped out the layout. He knew that after the human organ auctions, victims would be rushed off for surgery right away. In this place, evil lurked around every corner.
Shawn, knowing the place inside out, led Zoe to a secluded spot near the elevator—the area was crawling with surveillance cameras. If not for their resourcefulness, they would've been caught long before getting this far.
"Elevator's the only way down," Shawn said quietly. "All auction victims get taken straight to B2 level through it."
If they wanted to rescue the victims and wipe out this evil for good, they had no choice but to take the elevator.
"Don't worry," Zoe said, pulling out her phone—a modified device with capabilities rivaling a high-end computer.
It was a one-of-a-kind device Zoe had custom-built herself. Now, she was writing a program on it to hack straight into the Underground Kingdom's security system.
Zoe hacked into the elevator's surveillance system, replacing the next ten seconds—when they would have appeared—with a loop of an empty elevator so no one would see them enter.
Once everything was done, Zoe confidently pulled Shawn into the elevator and pressed the B2 button.
"That's one special phone you've got there," Shawn remarked.
With a playful grin, Zoe teased, "Want one? Give me a kiss and maybe—just maybe—I'll think about getting you one." But it was obvious to everyone she was only joking.
Before Zoe could react, Shawn leaned in and planted a quick kiss on her lips.
Zoe froze. She couldn't believe that Shawn had actually kissed her just because of a silly joke.
Zoe gaped at Shawn in utter astonishment. Though she usually had perfect control over her expressions, she couldn't stop her mask from slipping for a moment.
As the elevator doors opened on the second floor, Shawn stepped out and reminded her with a sly grin, "Don't forget—you owe me that phone."
Zoe hurried after him.
"Shawn, can I interview you?" Zoe teased, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm. "Since when does a legendary warrior like you resort to using your charms to get what you want?"
He had kissed her in a place this dangerous just for a phone, which shattered everything Zoe thought she knew.
However, Shawn remained silent and pressed forward. This was the heart of darkness where unspeakable crimes unfolded—no place for their earlier playfulness.
Zoe immediately understood the gravity of the situation. The two quickly split up, each slipping into concealment.
Suddenly, desperate screams pierced the air.
A terrified victim screamed, "No, please! I don't want to die! Somebody help me!"
It was immediately obvious—someone was being forced onto the operating table against their will.
Zoe spotted several medical staff approaching. She shot Shawn a warning glance, then swiftly darted into deeper shadows. Shawn quickly followed suit, finding cover of his own.
"Guys, why do you think the King suddenly wants so many people to undergo organ transplants here all at once?"
"The King's always been volatile—who could possibly guess what he's thinking?"
"You think this might have something to do with the international reception?"
"How so?"
"I heard the international reception brought in dignitaries from around the world. This mass surgery means the organ harvesting must be urgent. They wouldn't be in such a rush unless it's for foreign visitors with only a limited stay."
