Shawn went to handle the trouble outside, while Zoe stood transfixed before rows upon rows of test tubes and mysterious liquids, her mind racing with possibilities.
These weren't ordinary viruses. Lab reports showed that they were insanely contagious—anyone infected would completely lose consciousness and become a mindless killing machine.
Moreover, those infected people could be sound-controlled—just by playing specific low-frequency tones, they would turn into lethal weapons.
The Underground Kingdom's ambition was even greater than Zoe had imagined—they actually wanted to create something this terrifying. Perhaps they were aiming for world domination.
Thankfully, these things were just prototypes, and the preserved specimens were failed experiments.
If the Undergound Kingdom's researchers actually pulled it off, the world would erupt in chaos—people would never know peace again.
Zoe's face remained cold as she began mixing the chemicals. Had she not been so familiar with these substances, she'd be at a total loss right now.
Luckily, she knew exactly what she was doing. All she had to do was whip up a potent corrosive chemical—once it reacted with the viruses, they'd be utterly annihilated, leaving everything here nothing but useless sludge.
But the real headache was disposing of those corpses.
Even though those bodies were failed specimens, they were still loaded with the virus. Simply burning them wouldn't do the trick—if airborne transmission happened, it would be an absolute nightmare.
Zoe had to make these things vanish without a trace.
Shawn searched everywhere for an exit, but found none. With no other choice, he hit the alarm button.
This place was too important, so Shawn believed that backup would show up soon. And when they did, he would make them tell him where the exit was.
Zoe heard the alarm blaring outside and instantly knew what Shawn had done. Bringing those people here was risky, but it was still better than being trapped inside with no way out.
To keep Shawn safe, Zoe had to work faster.
Just as Zoe had destroyed most of the viruses, a hidden panel in the left wall suddenly slid open and two men emerged. One of them demanded, "Who are you?"
After saying this, he immediately fired at Zoe. With lightning reflexes, she sidestepped and hurled a test tube straight at them.
"Be careful! That virus is extremely dangerous," shouted a man in a lab coat from behind—presumably the lead researcher here.
Zoe's eyes turned icy. 'Perfect timing,' she thought. 'I'll just take them out now.'
The man in the lab coat—who turned out to be quite the chatterbox—immediately started ranting at Zoe. "Who the hell are you? Do you even know where you are? How dare a woman like you make trouble here?"
The gunman was a skilled fighter. Realizing his shots couldn't touch Zoe, he abandoned his weapon and charged forward, ready to engage her in close-quarters combat.
Zoe remained unfazed as they exchanged blows. After just a few moves, the man staggered back several steps, his icy glare fixed on her as if she were his sworn enemy.
Zoe remained unfazed and said, "You're the researcher behind these viruses, aren't you?"
"Indeed, I am Dr. Darren McKay," the man in the lab coat declared with smug superiority, "the one and only."
"Now you know who I am. Scared yet?" he sneered. "If you beg for mercy now, maybe I'll let my man make it quick. Otherwise, I'll turn you into a specimen with my own hands."
"Actually, you'd make an excellent specimen," he went on. "Clusian women are really something else—your skin is so delicate and smooth. You'd look absolutely stunning preserved as a specimen."
Darren was a total lunatic; his eyes lingered on Zoe with a sickeningly perverse glint.
Zoe stood her ground, fixing the two men with a cold, unflinching stare. She already knew that Darren was a madman, but there was something far more disturbing about the bodyguard beside him.
Zoe noticed the bodyguard's vacant eyes. She was sure she'd landed a heavy blow just now, but he hadn't made a sound. It was not that he was fearless, he simply couldn't feel pain at all.
Could this man be another one of Darren's test subjects? Has he succeeded?' Zoe thought, her gaze coldly fixed on Darren.
Darren smirked and said, "Relax. My bodyguard is exceptionally skilled—the King himself sent him to protect me. If you ever cross paths with him, you're in for a world of pain."
"Seize her alive," Darren commanded.
Following his command, the bodyguard lunged at Zoe again, his movements mechanical and ruthless.
Darren laughed. "Go ahead. Don't you dare hold back—he'll tear you limb from limb."
Zoe completely ignored Darren's chatter and engaged the bodyguard in combat. Just as Darren had said, the man was built like a tank—even when she went all out, she couldn't even crack a bone.
But Zoe wasn't done yet. When muscle failed, science would prevail.
Zoe swiftly pulled out the corrosive formula she'd just prepared—originally meant to destroy the virus-ridden corpses. Now she just got a chance to test it on a live subject.
As the liquid splashed onto the bodyguard, thick white smoke instantly billowed up from his body.
The liquid rapidly ate through the bodyguard's clothes, then his flesh, and finally his bones. Within seconds, his entire arm had completely dissolved.
Darren, standing off to the side, stared in shock, his eyes wide. "W-what the hell is this? How can it be so powerful?"
Darren had always prided himself on being a top scientist, but now, to his shock, he was forced to admit—Zoe was even more formidable than him.
Even with one arm gone, the bodyguard kept attacking. Zoe quickly realized the horrifying truth—though technically alive, his mind was completely hijacked by the virus. He'd become a walking biohazard, a lethal carrier of the very plague she was trying to destroy.
As the bodyguard charged forward, Darren flashed a twisted grin. 'If my bodyguard infects her,' he thought with giddy anticipation, 'She will become my next bodyguard.'
Just imagining having such a formidable woman as his personal bodyguard made Darren grin with barely suppressed glee.
Zoe had sensed something was off all along. The moment she saw Darren distracted, she seized the opportunity—her foot shot out, sending the charging bodyguard hurtling across the room.
As the bodyguard hurtled toward Darren, Zoe unleashed another spray of corrosive chemical. The agent ate through his flesh, sending droplets of tainted blood splattering onto Darren.
Darren's grin froze on his face. He shrieked, "You bitch! How dare you infect me with my own virus? I'll kill you! I swear I'll fucking kill you!"
Watching Darren go completely mad, Zoe sneered. "You deserve it."
Zoe advanced decisively, poised to douse the madman with the remaining chemical agent.
"Don't kill me!" Darren pleaded desperately. "I've perfected the ultimate humanoid weapons. Spare me, and I'll build you an invincible army—you'll rule the world as its queen."
He was full of grandiose promises—even offering to make Zoe queen of the world. But Zoe had no interest. Without hesitation, she splashed the entire bottle of chemical evenly over Darren.
Darren's eyes bulged in terror. He didn't want to die.
