The sickening crunch of bone-on-bone impacts, carried by the wind of flying fists, sent stunned onlookers tumbling to the ground in terror. A few of the more faint-hearted even peed their pants.
In the span of just a few breaths, the dozens of people blocking the entrance were all laid out lifeless. By the time the reinforcements arrived, all they saw was the ground littered with corpses.
"H-how... how are they all dead?"
"Am I seeing things? They're actually all dead!"
"N-no way, I can't believe we actually made it out alive!"
The sudden turn of fortune left those who had been certain of death just moments ago weak in the knees, and they collapsed to the ground one after another.
Zoe's gaze fell on Shawn, and she noticed a drop of blood on his left cheek. Instinctively, she reached out and tenderly wiped the blood away.
Shawn gazed at Zoe and, unable to resist, lowered his head to capture her crimson lips in a kiss. Zoe welcomed his affection without hesitation.
Just as they were lost in their passionate kiss, an untimely cough abruptly interrupted them. Zoe broke away from Shawn, her warm expression instantly turning icy as she fixed a piercing glare on the intruder.
Terrified by Zoe's murderous glare, the man nearly pissed himself. Trembling, he stammered, "W-we... we just wanted to ask if it's safe for us to leave now."
"The exit's right outside. Get going," Shawn said, having already scouted the perimeter and confirmed it was clear.
The group was overjoyed to have made it out alive, but they cast hesitant glances at the patients.
Frankly, Zoe couldn't care less about these people—their backgrounds were too complicated. "Just dump them somewhere they'll be found," she said indifferently. This way, someone would come and take them away sooner or later.
The group obeyed the orders and hurried out.
Zoe and Shawn glanced back at the pitch-black corridor. "Let's get out of here," Zoe said, striding toward the exit.
Shawn caught up and asked, "Are the virus samples disposed of?"
With a playful smirk, Zoe teased, "Dear Shawn, still don't trust me? Why not take charge yourself then?"
Shawn just swept Zoe into his arms and quickened his pace toward the exit.
No sooner had they stepped outside than a deafening blast erupted behind them. In an instant, the skyscraper collapsed, reduced to rubble. Emergency vehicles quickly swarmed the scene, while Zoe and Shawn melted into the crowd of fleeing survivors, observing the chaos with detached interest.
The Underground Kingdom took a heavy hit this time—their secret lab was blown to bits, and the underground auction was completely ruined. And to this moment, they were still clueless about who was behind all this.
Sam, the man in charge here, lashed out at his incompetent underlings, his face red with fury. "What the hell are you good for? Letting someone this dangerous slip right under your noses! Now tell me how you're going to explain this to the King?"
None of them dared to say anything. With a screw-up this big, they figured none of them were getting out alive.
Just then, a voice suddenly cut through the tension. "I know who's behind all this."
Zoe and Shawn turned to see Aileen emerge from the crowd. Aileen said firmly, her finger jabbing accusingly at Zoe, "It's her!"
Shawn's eyes turned icy, but Zoe pressed her hand against his arm to stop him. 'Aileen's tried to hurt me multiple times,' she thought. 'She must truly hate me to the core.'
"Go get her!" Aileen roared.
"Hold on," Zoe cut in, her voice firm.
"Got anything to say for yourself? This was all you—and I've got proof," Aileen sneered.
Aileen had secretly tailed Zoe and Shawn, snapping photos of them. She hadn't gotten Shawn yet—she couldn't bear to let him die. And he was the legendary warrior—his death would surely cause all sorts of trouble.
So, Aileen only kept a screenshot of Zoe alone: the moment Zoe entered the elevator—irrefutable evidence.
"It's really you! Seize her," Sam roared.
A dozen or so men charged at Zoe. The terrified crowd scrambled back, clearing the space as the attackers swiftly closed in, surrounding her completely.
Gasps then rippled through the crowd. "She's finished—she's as good as dead," someone murmured.
Aileen's blood surged as she watched, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. This was it—her chance to eliminate that constant irritation. Zoe was gone, and Shawn would be hers, free and clear.
A cruel smile twisted her lips. "Finish her," she spat. "She's the cause of all this mess."
Sam glared coldly at Zoe. "Who the hell are you? Why are you targeting the Underground Kingdom? Do you even know who you're messing with?"
Zoe remained silent.
Her defiant silence only enraged Sam further. He whipped off his belt, brandishing it menacingly at Zoe. "You're asking for it! I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget."
Zoe fixed him with an icy stare. "Drop it," she said coldly.
"Ha! You really think you're walking out of here alive today?" Sam sneered, brandishing his belt. "I'll teach you what real pain feels like!" With a vicious swing, he lashed it at Zoe.
Before the belt could strike Zoe, she snatched it mid-air with lightning reflexes. Caught off guard, Sam found himself yanked violently upward as Zoe effortlessly hurled him into the air.
With a powerful kick to Sam's gut, Zoe sent him flying high into the air. He crashed back down with a sickening thud, nearly dead on impact.
"Men! Kill that insolent woman," Sam roared.
A mob charged at Zoe, unleashing a barrage of punches, kicks, and every dirty trick they could think of.
Shawn simply stood by, watching with detached calm. 'These trash aren't even worth my attention,' he thought, 'let alone Zoe.'
The air was filled with shrill, pained yells as the attackers went down one by one, all in the blink of an eye.
Zoe was a force to be reckoned with—she'd taken out the whole lot without breaking a sweat. Anyone else would've been toast. The onlookers gawked in shock, then started edging away, their bravado gone. No one wanted to tangle with her now.
Aileen's face turned stormy as she watched Zoe not only survive but dominate the scene.
"Who else wants a piece of me?" Zoe asked, her tone flat and unimpressed.
The crowd kept backing off, nobody daring to step forward. They'd learned their lesson.
As Zoe turned to head back to Shawn, a voice rumbled through the air. A giant of a man, easily six-foot-five, marched toward her, his presence commanding and intimidating. "Feisty little thing, aren't you?" he drawled, a sneer curling his lips.
The crowd sucked in a breath, their eyes wide with a mix of awe and fear.
"Isn't that the Black Knight, one of the King's own guards?"
"It's the Black Knight! Never expected him to show up here."
"That girl's done for! The Black Knight's a legendary killer—when he strikes, death follows."
