Shawn sensed it too—an instinctive reaction to danger. He and Zoe exchanged a glance, pretended nothing was wrong, and kept walking.
The Black Knight walked to the curb as a car pulled up. "Get in," he said.
Zoe and Shawn climbed straight into the car, while the Black Knight took the front passenger seat. Without wasting a second, the car sped off, leaving the street behind.
"Put these on," the Black Knight ordered, handing them two black cloth bags to pull over their heads.
'How cliché—people still use these old tricks?' Zoe thought with a hint of mockery. But neither she nor Shawn cared; a mere cloth bag couldn't block their heightened senses. They played along without hesitation.
By now, Black Knight had already contacted Kadeem the King—they'd prepared a trap ahead.
After what felt like an eternity of driving, the car finally came to a halt. "We're here. Get out," the Black Knight said.
Zoe and Shawn yanked off the black hoods and found themselves in a huge underground parking garage. The Black Knight was being overly cautious, clearly worried they'd figure out where they were.
But all these unnecessary precautions only revealed his paranoia—after all, if he wasn't afraid they might actually escape alive, why go to such lengths?
Shawn alighted first, then turned back without a word to offer his hand to Zoe. Radiating intimacy, their hands intertwined in a gesture so natural it spoke volumes about their bond.
"Follow me," the Black Knight said coolly, glancing at them. "The King is waiting."
Kadeem, the King himself, lounged on his luxurious golden throne, reveling in luxury as beautiful women fed him grapes. When a servant reported that Zoe and Shawn had been brought in, he spat out the grape skin and commanded lazily, "Let them in."
Zoe and Shawn were simultaneously escorted before Kadeem.
But when Kadeem's gaze landed on Shawn, an instinctive rivalry flared up—Shawn's commanding presence clearly sparked his envy. With a dismissive wave, Kadeem barked, "Keep that man back. Just bring the woman forward."
Zoe stepped up to Kadeem, her eyes cold and unyielding.
Kadeem had seen plenty of beautiful women—just look at the ones around him, each more stunning than the last. But none had ever made his pulse quicken the way Zoe did. She wasn't conventionally extraordinary, yet there was something about her that held his gaze.
With a lazy smirk, he said, "I'll give you a chance. Be mine, and I'll let what you did to my auction house slide. Consider the slate wiped clean—if you're smart, you'll take the offer."
At these words, the crowd erupted in mocking laughter.
"Look at this lucky bitch—she actually caught the King's eye. Guess she gets to keep breathing after all."
"What a lucky girl—she gets to be the King's woman."
"Looks like the King's adding another beauty to his collection."
Everyone assumed Zoe would accept Kadeem's offer without hesitation. After all, he ruled over a vast territory and had limitless wealth—the kind of man every woman in the exclusive district dreamed of.
"Not a chance," Zoe said coolly.
Zoe's voice was soft, yet the effect was immediate—the crowd held their breath. The silence grew so thick you could hear a pin drop. No one dared to move, uncertain of what would follow. But one thing was clear: defying Kadeem meant certain doom.
There was a deadly second of silence before Kadeem finally spoke, his voice dangerously low, "Come again?"
"I decline your offer," Zoe replied coolly.
Kadeem let out a string of icy, mirthless laughs.
One of his girls hurried over, clinging to his arm as she cooed, "Don't trouble yourself. This ungrateful wretch isn't worth your anger—just have her killed."
