"You're all useless cowards! Fine, I will take care of this myself. "In her blind rage, Aileen didn't even realize what she was saying.
The bodyguards actually took her words to heart, retreating all the way to the entrance—clearly planning to bolt the moment Aileen got her ass kicked. Meanwhile, the clueless onlookers were convinced she must be some martial arts master; otherwise, why would she dare take on Zoe?
"Go get her, Ms. Carleton! We've got your back."
"Ms. Carleton, you're unstoppable!"
"Ms. Carleton, this is in the bag."
But Aileen was instantly filled with bone-deep regret.
Zoe stared Aileen down, almost daring her to make a move.
"J-just you wait! I won't let this go," Aileen sputtered, and then turned tail and fled.
The crowd was stunned. 'What the hell? She just ran off? Where's the promised showdown? What about all that tough talk?'
Those who had foolishly believed in Aileen now wore expressions of utter dismay—they'd just been outsmarted, and the humiliation stung.
Emmett sighed in relief and asked, "So, what's our next move?"
"Send a team to resolve the lost factory project immediately. Don't skimp on compensation—reputation comes first," Zoe ordered decisively. She had already prepared for this scenario.
Originally, she had invited the Wadden Group to invest to protect the Ludwig family from the White family's schemes, but now it seemed she would need to devise an alternative strategy.
"Understood. I know how to handle this," Emmett replied. Knowing how much the whole ordeal had troubled Zoe, he promptly arranged for someone to escort her to rest. He was confident he could take care of the rest on his own.
Zoe decided to stay behind at the office and put her new plan into action, diving straight into work as everyone else left.
Zoe had been working nonstop, barely noticing the hours slip by, until her phone suddenly rang. It was Shawn. "Where are you?" he asked.
"I'm working late at the office," Zoe said as she saved the drafted merger proposal and sent it to Terry.
Terry came here in person to discuss business. Since the Marlowe Group wasn't strong enough on its own, the solution was simple: merge the two companies and make Marlowe a subsidiary of the Wadden Group.
This way, the Marlowe Group would have two powerful backers behind it, and anyone thinking of targeting Marlowe would have to consider whether they could afford to cross us.
Shawn said, "I'll pick you up."
Zoe glanced at the clock and replied, "It's fine, you don't have to."
Shawn said, "I'm already downstairs."
Hearing this, Zoe wasn't surprised in the least. "You're already here, yet you still called—trying to surprise me?" she teased.
"I'm taking you somewhere," Shawn said.
Zoe shut down her laptop. "I'll be right down," she said.
Zoe stepped out of the office building just as a car pulled up. She opened the door and slid into the passenger seat. "Where are we going?"
Shawn remained silent.
But Zoe spotted a bouquet of white lilies on the back seat. She didn't know what these were for.
Shawn soon brought her to a nearby cemetery. At this late hour, there were hardly any people around visiting graves. As they walked through the quiet grounds, passing row after row of silent headstones.
"My dear Shawn, is this your idea of a romantic date spot?" Zoe quipped, glancing at the rows of tombstones.
Shawn held the flowers in one hand and Zoe's hand in the other, leading her silently until they stopped before a gravestone. He placed the flowers down and introduced her directly. "Mom, Dad, I've brought my girlfriend to meet you."
Zoe thought, 'Seriously? Who brings their girlfriend to meet the parents like this? No wonder Shawn stayed single for so long.'
Shawn said, "Zoe, these are my parents. Today's their death anniversary."
