Sophia paused, her glass halfway to her lips. "Targeting Marlowe Group?"
"Yeah, word is it's a foreign heiress—filthy rich and well-connected," one of her friends said.
"The Marlowe Group really got hit hard at first. But somehow they managed to turn things around and win a round—for now," another chimed in.
"But I hear that heiress isn't backing down," a third added. "Looks like Jelonsburg's about to get wild with these two giants clashing."
Sophia's eyes lit up as a scheme formed in her mind.
Since the White family hadn't decided whether to break with the Ludwig family, Sophia couldn't use them to target Zoe anymore. She had no choice but to rely on that unreliable Eunice—it was so frustrating.
'But if what my friends said is true,' Sophia schemed, 'All I need to do is connect with this heiress. Then we could team up against Zoe. Even better, I could stay behind the scenes and use her as my pawn.'
At this thought, Sophia broke into a hearty laugh. "Come on, let's drink. All tabs on me tonight!"
Her friends whooped and hollered. "Ms. White, you're so generous!"
Ever since that day Shawn and Zoe parted ways, Shawn had been showing up daily to pick Zoe up after work. However, unwilling to face her emotions, Zoe always had Emmett cover for her while she slipped away unnoticed.
Several days had passed without them meeting, and the distance was clearly weighing on Shawn's mind.
Chase set the file in front of Shawn and whispered, "Boss, is something bothering you lately? Why not talk to me about it, and maybe I can help? Those brats are getting crushed by your training; if this keeps up, they'll end up in the hospital."
Shawn turned to Chase and asked bluntly, "Why would a woman keep avoiding me after turning down my proposal?"
Chase immediately scooted closer. "You proposed to Zoe? Spill the details."
Shawn fell silent.
Chase said, "I've been around the block. If you don't tell me what's going on, how am I supposed to help you figure it out?"
Shawn seemed to have no one else to turn to, so he told Chase the whole story.
Chase couldn't help but burst out laughing. "Oh my. You took Zoe to a cemetery to propose? No wonder she blew you off. Most girls would've dumped you on the spot for that."
Shawn remained stone-faced. "I took her to meet my parents. What's wrong with that?"
"Dead wrong! Proposing is supposed to be romantic, but you picked the creepiest place and didn't even realize it was a terrible idea." Chase shook his head and added, "How did I never notice you have the emotional intelligence of a rock?"
Shawn said flatly, "So that's why she's been avoiding me."
"I bet Zoe's steamed about that," Chase said. "If you want to make up, pick a nicer spot for your next date. Set the right mood and she'll come around."
Shawn immediately pulled out his phone, ready to ask Zoe out.
Chase shook his head. "Trust me, that's not gonna work. Zoe's dodging you right now. If you call, she'll just say she's busy."
R, refusing to give up, Shawn dialed Zoe's number again. "Are you free this Sunday? Let's go on a date," he said, getting straight to the point.
Zoe's voice was ice-cold. "I'm busy."
"I—" Shawn opened his mouth. But before he could finish, the line went dead. Frustrated, he turned to Chase.
"I told you, this approach won't work," Chase said. "Let us handle the venue and set up the date. We'll even invite her, and when the time comes, just show some romantic initiative. Got it?"
"Take the initiative? How?" Shawn asked, utterly clueless about how to pursue a girl.
