Elliot sent the footage Sophia requested to the email address she provided. To preempt any trouble from Zoe, he dispatched his subordinates to deliver the payment Sophia had offered to Zoe's door.
Just as Shawn and Zoe returned to the hotel after dinner, they were stopped again at the entrance by Elliot's men.
Shawn immediately stepped in front of Zoe. Even though she didn't need protection, it was just his instinct to shield her.
"Step back," Zoe said softly, moving in front of Shawn as usual.
Shawn acted without hesitation while Zoe never voiced her thoughts, yet they both understood each other perfectly.
No matter how strong Zoe was, she secretly cherished the feeling of being protected by him. As her boyfriend, Shawn felt it was his natural duty to keep her safe.
At that moment, Aileen stepped out with her people. Noticing the commotion outside the hotel, she let out a mocking laugh. "Zoe, you are something else. You've barely been here, and already so many people want you dead."
She eyed the men who came looking for Zoe—each one built like a tank, clearly trained fighters. "You guys better be careful. That woman's no joke. If you want to take her down, you'd better gang up on her," she said.
Aileen was sure these men were here to stir up trouble, so she decided to stay put and watch the drama unfold. She even called out to passersby, inviting them to join her for the spectacle.
She jerked her chin at Zoe. "See that woman? She's full of herself. All these guys are here just to teach her a lesson. Just wait, they'll jump her any second."
Aileen's words instantly piqued the curiosity of the passersby. They pulled out their phones, ready to record the impending showdown.
Aileen pulled out her own phone too. Even though she knew those guys were no match for Zoe, she still relished seeing her humiliated.
With Aileen relentlessly "promotion," all the onlookers were poised, eagerly awaiting the showdown between the two sides.
Zoe stood her ground, waiting. After all, those guys were the ones who came looking for her. If anyone was going to start a fight, it had to be them.
After a long while, the crowd started jeering.
"Move!"
"What, still not fighting?"
"A bunch of losers! You're scared of a woman?"
Zoe couldn't help but wonder, 'These people came here to provoke me, but they're not making a move. What exactly are they up to?'
Under the noise of the eager onlookers, the leader finally made his move—he raised his hand in a subtle, forward wave.
It looked like a signal for the men behind him to strike. Zoe's eyes sharpened with focus as she braced herself to wrap this fight up fast.
But the guys bowed deeply in union and shouted, "We're sorry!"
The crowd was completely stunned, their heads spinning. 'What's going on? Weren't they about to fight? How did it turn into an apology?' they wondered.
Zoe and Shawn were taken aback too. "What's this about?" Zoe demanded.
The leader of the guys explained, "Our boss said messing with a heavyweight like you is bad news. He sent us to apologize and hand over the cash we got paid for this gig. Please don't bring heat to our underground fighting arena."
Zoe had encountered all sorts of people, and most were full of themselves. She had never come across a boss this savvy. She figured if the chance popped up, she might buddy up with him.
"Tell your boss I appreciate the thought," Zoe said coolly. "I'm not the petty type who'd wreck his establishment."
The leader set the case full of cash down in front of Zoe, then turned to leave with the others.
