The Hunter Tournament brought together elite operatives in a single boot camp, where they endured the most grueling drills imaginable.
This competition was simply out of reach for ordinary people. After all, not everyone could endure the dual torment of body and mind.
"Are you seriously choosing this place for the competition?" Zoe asked.
"No, no, the competition is tomorrow at a dedicated venue, and only the top champions from each country will compete," he explained.
"Wait? This isn't mandatory, right? And since we've got both men and women, are you planning on setting up separate training grounds?" Shawn spoke with authority.
Shawn had lost count of how many times he'd entered this kind of Hunter Tournament. He always came back a champion, every single time.
But no one understood the perils and hardships better than Shawn did. This was downright unfair to Zoe as the only female participant.
"All judges must participate this time, and the champion is also required to compete," the emcee said.
This meant both Shawn and Zoe have to participate. This was a mandatory training session.
'This feels like they're targeting Zoe,' Shawn thought, frowning. Zoe also saw what was going on, but she couldn't care less.
'Hunter Tournament? Pfft,' Zoe scoffed to herself. 'Even in the most hellish game, I'll be the last one standing.'
Shawn looked at Zoe and said, "You don't have to go through with this if you don't want to. Let me file an appeal for you."
It was unfair to make a rookie compete in a tournament like this.
The emcee, seemingly afraid that Zoe might actually quit, quickly added, "Zoe, if you quit the competition, you'll have to give up your title as champion."
Zoe cut Shawn off mid-sentence, looked straight at the emcee, and declared, "I'm in."
The emcee, having gotten what he wanted, flashed a satisfied grin and walked off.
Backstage, Shawn said to Zoe, "You shouldn't have agreed. This is a setup targeting you."
"The more they come after me, the harder I'll make them regret it." Zoe reached out and gently brushed her fingers along Shawn's neck, her touch lingering. "Oh? Are you worried about me?"
"I do care about you." Shawn admitted his concern.
Zoe's playful expression vanished, her face turning deadly serious. "I'm no delicate hothouse flower who needs a man's protection. I'm a carnivorous plant thriving in the rainforest."
"Mr. Ludwig, aren't you afraid I might devour you?" With that, Zoe playfully leaned in and gently nipped at Shawn's earlobe.
The intimate gesture sent an electric tingling coursing through Shawn's entire body.
Aileen stormed over and snapped, "Break it up, you two." She reached out, trying to pull them apart. But both Zoe and Shawn instinctively recoiled from her approach.
Shawn didn't hesitate. He scooped Zoe into his arms and quickly put a good distance between them and Aileen. Their disdain for Aileen was written all over their faces.
Aileen was seething with rage, her chest heaving violently. She was about to pass out from sheer rage. "You two are way out of line."
Zoe forced a smile, but her eyes remained ice-cold. "You flatter us, Ms. Carleton, but we are nowhere near your level."
Aileen, fuming with rage, hissed, "Zoe, tomorrow, you're done for."
Zoe stood her ground, remaining calm and composed. "Bring it on," she retorted, her voice steady and unshaken.
Aileen stormed off with her people.
But out of the corner of her eye, Zoe caught sight of a familiar figure in the crowd.
"What's wrong?" Shawn asked, noticing her sudden tension.
"Nothing, must be my eyes," Zoe said casually, though her gaze remained razor-sharp.
Shawn didn't give it another thought. Scooping Zoe into his arms, he strode out of the competition venue.
Since there was a competition tomorrow, they needed to rest up tonight. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to withstand tomorrow's hellish trial.
Zoe noticed that Shawn kept a tense face the entire way back and knew exactly what was troubling him.
Zoe looked him straight in the eye and said, "Do you really think I'm some fragile damsel who needs protecting? Dead wrong."
