"Ms. Carleton," Sophia said, "I know you're upset that my plan failed, but doesn't that just prove how formidable Zoe really is?
"Ordinary methods won't work on her. We need a foolproof plan, one that ensures she walks in, but never walks out alive."
A wicked gleam flashed in Aileen's eyes. "Are you saying you want her to die in the competition?"
Sophia leaned in close to Aileen's ear, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've heard accidents happen frequently during the Hunter Tournament. If we just—"
A wicked gleam flashed in Aileen's eyes. "You think that's actually doable?"
Sophia knew exactly what Aileen was worried about, but if they missed this chance, there might never be another opportunity to bring Zoe down.
"Ms. Carleton," Sophia said with feigned sincerity, "we're on the same side here. Since we're both out to get Zoe, why would I ever set you up?"
"Fair point," Aileen sneered, "but every plan you came up with backfired. Zoe wiped out all my people instead. So, what's your excuse for that?"
Aileen wasn't born yesterday. Naturally, she'd think twice about any idea coming from someone so useless.
Sophia clenched her fists. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would be questioned by this brainless trash.
Sophia seethed inwardly, 'If that idiot Aileen hadn't screwed up a sure thing, would we be stuck in this mess? Honestly, the whole plan failed because of that deadweight Aileen.'
"This time, just follow my instructions to the letter, and success is guaranteed," said Sophia.
"Then why don't you handle it yourself?" Aileen asked, her voice laced with skepticism.
Fearing her scheme to manipulate Aileen into dealing with Zoe might be exposed, Sophia immediately put on a pitiful look and said, "Me? I'm just a helpless guy.
"How could I possibly stand against Zoe? Besides, who in this world could possibly rival your wealth?"
Aileen's face lit up at once. "Damn right. Everyone knows I'm loaded."
"Relax. My money can handle anything," Aileen said with a confident wave.
Though the recruits in the Hunter Tournament were all elite operatives from nations across the globe, they were still just regular people. No one in their right mind would turn down money. Many soldiers from Clusia were also bought.
So, with her wealth, Aileen had more than enough tricks up her sleeve to ensure Zoe wouldn't survive the Hunter Tournament.
"Then it's all up to you now," Sophia said with a confident smile.
Aileen looked at Sophia with a supremely confident smirk.
"Time for me to go." As Sophia turned away, the humble facade vanished from her face; only cold contempt remained. All that was left in her heart was cold contempt for Aileen.
'Idiot,' Sophia sneered inwardly, her contempt clear.
The next morning, Zoe stepped out of her room to find Shawn already waiting. "Couldn't be bothered to knock?"
Shawn handed Zoe a bag of breakfast. "I just got here. The shuttle's waiting. Let's move out."
Zoe eyed the breakfast, but had little appetite.
Seeing this, Shawn immediately barked out an order. "Eat it all. This is your first day at the training camp. If you don't fuel up properly, you'll be out before sunset."
Zoe turned to Shawn with a raised eyebrow. "Are you overreacting? Surely it's not that serious."
Shawn knew Zoe wasn't taking him seriously. But the Hunter Tournament was no joke. In that place, people were not even human, likely worse off than stray dogs.
But even if Shawn warned a rookie like Zoe, she wouldn't buy it.
Zoe reluctantly polished off the entire breakfast as Shawn had ordered before boarding the vehicle.
Zoe and Shawn weren't the only ones in this competition. Also among them were competitors Zoe had defeated in previous matches.
After all, the Hunter Tournament was open to anyone willing to participate. They just showed up, and they were in.
Inside the vehicle, a dozen or so competitors eyed each other warily in tense silence. Every one of Zoe's defeated opponents was now shooting daggers at her. She was the one who robbed them of their glory.
