As soon as the group stepped into the tent, they spotted Zoe devouring her steak with single-minded focus, barely pausing for breath.
"Look at this woman. Is she nuts? Has she never had steak before?"
"I heard people from Clusia are dirt poor. Maybe she's never even laid eyes on a steak in her life?"
"Let her eat. Maybe she'll stuff herself so full she can't even handle the training later."
Zoe ignored their taunts and, like Shawn, seized the moment to refuel.
Ryan strode in, saw that most of them weren't eating, and barked, "Looks like you've all lost your appetite. Perfect timing. Take the leftovers and feed them to the dogs."
The group stood frozen in disbelief.
But only after all the food had been cleared away did Ryan announce, "That's your ration for the next two days. Finish this meal, and you won't eat again until the day after tomorrow.
"Since you're not hungry and already prepped, fall in and prepare for combat drills."
"What? Sir, you never mentioned this. That doesn't count."
"Yes, we demand to eat."
"That's not fair. You never told us about this."
As the trainees began protesting, Ryan said coldly, "Disobeying orders? Fine. The gate's right there. Scram."
None of them wanted to lose face, so the moment they heard that, the whole group fell silent.
Some of the nastier trainees, seeing others still eating, snatched their food away, ready to devour it.
But Ryan was even faster. He snatched the food away and dumped it straight into the slop bucket. He snarled, "Want food? Then fish it out of the slop bucket and eat it."
The entire group froze in shock. 'What fucking kind of order is this?' everyone thought in disbelief. But no one dared to defy Instructor Ludwig.
Ryan ordered those who had stolen food to fish it out from the slop bucket and eat it or get the hell out.
Their mocking grins vanished instantly. Forced to eat the slop, they gagged with every bite, their faces twisted in disgust.
Ryan warned, "Let this be a warning. If anyone tries to steal someone else's food again, this will be your fate."
Zoe finished the last of her steak before heading out with Shawn to gear up for the drills.
The other trainees, having missed their meal, grew uneasy about the impending drills if they were able to keep up with the brutal training intensity that was coming.
Ryan announced, "It was your first day of training. Now that you're full, get moving. Cover 31 miles in one hour. Anyone late gets zero sleep tonight."
Hearing this, the group was dumbstruck. '31 miles in one hour? That's insane for most people. Are they actually serious about this brutal training?' they wondered.
"Forgot to mention. Those are your packs. Grab yours and move out, double time," Ryan added.
Zoe eyed the backpack. This thing had to weigh at least 110 pounds. That was like carrying a full-grown adult on one's back while running 31 miles. And they had to complete it in one hour. Now that was just insane.
Swearing had already erupted among the group.
"This hellhole. Should've never come here."
"This is absolutely brutal. I'm gonna die."
At that moment, Ryan caught their grumbling. His voice was ice-cold. "You're damn right. People die here. So think carefully. Do you really want to continue?"
The trainees exchanged uneasy glances, and several more immediately bailed out of the training. They would soon get their special treatment.
Ryan ordered them to stay put. "You'll get your farewell party after everyone completes the training."
Zoe and Shawn exchanged a knowing glance. Shawn said to Zoe, "See that? Let's crush it."
"Move out," Ryan barked, already timing them.
Without hesitation, Zoe and Shawn shouldered their packs and broke into a steady run.
