Nobody could believe this.
Realizing that Zoe and Shawn had uncovered their scheme, the remaining few immediately stopped what they were doing. They thought, 'Whatever, we've still got ten days left, plenty of time to settle this!'
Standing at the finish line with his stopwatch, Ryan weeded out all underperformers, only to find that fewer than thirty had passed. The rest had all exceeded the time limit.
Ryan barked, "Anyone who missed the deadline, no sleep tonight, plus 300 push-ups! Fail again tomorrow, and you'll get the same punishment."
Zoe and Shawn shouldered their backpacks and headed for the barracks.
Only their group of thirty-plus who had completed the mission were granted barracks access, while the rest were left on the field to endure punishment.
There were no separate barracks for men and women, everyone bunked together. Among the hundred-plus trainees, Zoe stood as the only woman.
As Zoe and Shawn entered one of the barracks, several men trailed in after them. Completely ignoring Shawn, they all fixed Zoe with leering, predatory stares.
One said, "Can you believe a woman dared to come here? Is she just dumb, or is she a total slut?"
Another chimed in, "She must be desperate, coming to a place full of men just to get her kicks."
One shameless guy actually started undressing and said, "Come on! I'll strip right now so she can get an eyeful!"
Seeing this, Shawn was about to make a move. But Zoe held him back.
Seeing that Zoe remained unmoved, the men assumed she was just playing hard to get and grew even more brazen. One of them ripped off his shirt with a vulgar grin, showing off his well-built muscles.
He teased, "Sweetheart, what do you think of this body? Stick with me and I'll show you a real good time!"
Another peeled off his shirt to reveal his lean, toned waist. He said, "You call those noodles muscles? This is the real deal. A real man's strength is all at the core."
They were all deliberately stripping down right in front of Zoe, clearly targeting her with their harassment.
Zoe couldn't care less. No matter how impressive these guys looked, she wasn't the least bit tempted. After all, the best was already right beside her.
Zoe pulled Shawn toward a random bunk bed.
"Take the top bunk," Shawn said, unwilling to let Zoe sleep on the lower bed.
Zoe offered no objection. She knew they needed to grab some shut-eye now to prepare for the brutal drills that awaited them next.
Zoe settled onto her bunk, and Shawn followed suit, lying down on his own.
One guy sneered, "Look at these Clusians. They're so useless. They barely ran any distance, and they're already lying down, exhausted."
Another chimed in, "Damn right! Clusians are all short and scrawny, total weaklings."
A third added, "Exactly! Pathetic losers!"
The whole group burst into uproarious laughter, nearly doubling over at their crude jokes.
Yet Zoe and Shawn slept soundly, utterly unfazed, as if nothing had happened.
Just then, a man strode straight to the bunk bed. He first checked Shawn. Seeing that Shawn didn't move, the man shifted his gaze up to Zoe on the top bunk.
The others huddled together, strategizing how to survive the upcoming training. Only this man kept staring at Zoe with venomous intensity, as if she were his sworn enemy.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle pierced the air.
Zoe sprang up and, without hesitation, leapt straight down from the top bunk. Shawn, waiting below, caught her firmly in his arms. They quickly laced up their boots and dashed out the door.
"What the hell's going on?" someone muttered, completely baffled.
Several others scrambled after Zoe and Shawn.
On the training field, Ryan stood waiting with his dog, stopwatch in hand. "You've got three minutes! Anyone late misses lunch!" he barked.
