Everyone lost interest in the spectacle and hurried off to shower, eager to get some rest.
With only Shawn and Zoe left, they finally had a chance to talk.
Shawn walked over and gently brushed the damp hair from Zoe's forehead. "Are you holding up?" he asked, concern in his voice.
Zoe shook her head, a faint smile appearing. "This is nothing for me," she replied confidently.
Shawn said, "Once this competition is over, I'll settle this for you." He was already fed up with Aileen's constant interference in their lives. He knew that if he didn't put a stop to it now, Aileen might cross even more boundaries.
Zoe playfully pinched Shawn's cheek. She teased, "Settle this? How exactly? Are you going to beat her up or just scold her? You can never wake someone who's pretending to be asleep."
She thought, 'Aileen knows she couldn't force love, but she still does it. I doubt she likes Shawn. She probably just enjoys the thrill of conquest.'
Shawn replied, "Even so, I can't just stand by and do nothing."
He thought, 'If Aileen were only harassing me, I might let it slide. But she's targeted Zoe more than once, and now she's dragged Zoe into this deadly training.
'Zoe is my woman. How could I possibly remain calm seeing my girl go through so much undeserved hardship and humiliation?'
Zoe was delighted to see Shawn taking the matter so seriously. But she never needed a man to fight her battles for her when she was wronged. In her opinion, women's matters were best left for women to handle themselves.
She said, "Shawn? Mr. Ludwig? Come on, don't be mad. Right now, I'm not even worried about what Aileen might do to me. What really concerns me is that person hiding among us.
"Every time he's directed malice at me, I've ended up attacked. It's clear someone put him up to making sure I don't leave this training camp alive."
Zoe threw herself into Shawn's arms, clinging to him affectionately. She pouted, "You've got to protect me, or I'll be a goner."
Shawn assured her, "Don't worry, Zoe. I won't let them get away with it."
The scene of Zoe and Shawn embracing was live-streamed right in front of Aileen and Sophia. Seeing Zoe nestled in Shawn's arms, both girls were seething with envy and resentment.
Aileen snapped, "This is getting us nowhere! How long do we have to wait?"
Worried that Aileen might mess up their plan, Sophia quickly intervened, "It's only the first day. Be patient. Once Zoe gets weaker, she'll be easy prey."
During the competition, neither Aileen nor Sophia planned to stop that skilled foreign assassin from making his move. If he managed to kill Zoe, all the better; if not, it didn't matter.
After all, the rule they'd set from the very beginning was simple: make sure Zoe didn't make it out of this training competition alive. As for how or when the assassin would do it, they left that entirely up to the assassin.
Aileen pointed at Zoe and said, "She's been flaunting her victory in front of us. If I have to wait another week, I'll lose my mind!"
Sophia said, "You saw it yourself. When this woman is at her peak, no one here can take her down! Our only chance is to wait until she's completely worn out after a few days of torment. That's when we can strike.
"That guy's smart. He's been carefully testing Zoe's limits and still hasn't exposed his identity. That's impressive."
Sophia thought, 'Compared to those idiots before, the fact that he's lasted this long without being taken out or discovered by Zoe is honestly remarkable. Maybe if we waited a bit longer, he'd pull off a surprise for us.'
