Shawn strode up to the attacker, his face icy. Without wasting a breath, he threw the first punch.
The attacker tried to argue, but didn't last three moves before being floored by Shawn.
Shawn's fist stopped abruptly, hovering just inches from the man's nose. A fraction more force would have shattered his nasal bone. If Shawn had hit any harder, he might've crushed the man's skull.
The crowd couldn't fathom why Shawn, despite his fury, held back from delivering the killing blow.
But Zoe understood. She thought, 'Shawn believes that killing the man in a single move would have been far too merciful.'
With practiced efficiency, Shawn snapped all four of the man's limbs and tossed him aside, leaving him helpless on the ground.
Nothing was more despairing than slowly freezing to death.
The man barely managed to gasp out, "I give..." as he desperately tried to save his life.
But Shawn gave him no chance. In one swift motion, his dagger flashed and severed the man's tongue.
Blood gushed out, scalding hot at first, but in seconds froze into crimson ice.
The man could feel the warmth slowly draining away from his body, little by little, yet not a soul came to his rescue.
As Shawn returned to Zoe's side, a few people approached the man. They didn't want to help him, but to strip him of his warm clothing.
With his last protection gone, the man's death was accelerated. Within just a few minutes, his limbs froze solid, stiff and cold. Death was inevitable.
Zoe nestled in Shawn's arms as they huddled together for warmth. Unlike the others, who eyed each other with suspicion, their bond was unshakable.
Their unity made it clear to others: crossing either of them meant facing two formidable foes. Those who wanted to survive knew better than to mess with them.
The depth of their trust and comradeship left everyone in awe.
Zoe's injuries were only superficial, nothing serious. But she had to play up her wounds; otherwise, she'd never lure out that mysterious figure. Of course, the added bonus was earning Shawn's concern and attention.
Shawn whispered, "We can't just stay here like this. They said we have to stay for half an hour, but they never said it had to be in this hellhole. If we get out, it shouldn't be against the rules!"
He was already exploiting a loophole in the mission parameters.
And as it happened, Zoe was thinking the same thing. She thought, 'Even if we could tough it out for half an hour, this place is 22 below zero Fahrenheit—a freezing hell. Just standing still would turn us into icicles in minutes.'
Zoe suggested, "Let's get them all involved. If we're breaking rules, it can't just be one or two of us."
Zoe strode toward the remaining people and said, "I know what you're thinking. Instead of fighting over our clothes, let's get out of this hellhole together.
"Rules are meant to be broken. You can stay here and die, or join us and rewrite the rules!"
Others pondered, 'Since this training camp requires someone to last until the end, a mass violation leading to everyone's elimination would never be permitted. Now is the time for us to rise and defy the rules.'
One shouted, "Let's go all out!"
"She's right. Now's the time to stick together," someone echoed.
The fewer than ten remaining immediately sided with Zoe. As one, they charged out of the frozen chamber.
Zoe, still injured, didn't exert much strength. While the others worked with Shawn to break down the door, she lingered nearby, pretending to assist. She was just waiting for that mysterious attacker to strike when the opportunity arose.
With everyone focused on breaking down the door, no one noticed Zoe anymore.
Zoe clutched her abdomen, feigning pain. She looked every bit the wounded prey.
