The remaining seven glared daggers at Zoe and Shawn as they passionately embraced. Some couldn't hold back and erupted in curses, hurling obscenities so foul they could peel paint.
Suddenly, a sharp whistle pierced the air. Time was up.
Everyone let out a sigh of relief and bolted from the freezing pit as fast as they could.
The sight of Zoe and Shawn being all lovey-dovey sent Sophia and Aileen into another emotional meltdown.
Aileen grumbled, "That damn Zoe! She's got a death wish, and now she's making Shawn warm her up?"
Sophia clenched her fists as she listened to Aileen's complaints, her anger flaring up even hotter.
She thought, 'Zoe is something else. She always knows how to twist Shawn around her little finger. He's constantly worried about her and can't help but dote on her 24/7. If this keeps up, those two might just get married right on the spot.'
Sophia sneered, "Aileen, is this the best your hitman can do?"
Aileen snapped, "How dare you say that! Weren't you the one who claimed your plan would guarantee Zoe's death?"
Sophia shot back, "I was certain of it! Didn't you see Zoe's already hurt? If your assassin had just been a bit more competent, he could've finished her off without Shawn interfering."
Aileen couldn't believe Sophia dared to shift the blame onto her. She let out a mocking laugh and said, "I must've been out of my mind to ever listen to your damn advice.
"Get lost! The farther away you are, the better. Otherwise, I'll ruin your precious White family!"
Seeing that Aileen was about to turn on her, Sophia left. She thought, 'It's nearly impossible to eliminate Zoe this time. I'll have to find another way. As for that useless heiress Aileen, I'll never have anything to do with her again.'
Aileen, fuming, grabbed a wine bottle and hurled it against the wall, shattering it into pieces. She spat, "That damn Sophia! How dare she bite the hand that feeds her? I'll make her pay for this!"
Then, Aileen smashed the TV. She thought, 'If I can't kill that damn Zoe, what's the point of watching any longer?'
The real battle had only just begun. After a brutal half-hour cold-endurance trial, only nine remained. These nine were truly the elite of the elite. They stood before Ryan, their eyes burning with resentment.
Ryan remained stone-faced. He said, "You've only completed the first trial. What comes next will be far more perilous. Are you all ready?"
The group ignored Ryan, their silence heavy with resentment.
Ryan suddenly bellowed, "No answer means automatic forfeit! Are you all ready for the next challenge?"
"We're ready!" the group roared back.
Zoe and Shawn stood prominently among the nine. Though Zoe's wound had stopped bleeding, it had only been hastily bandaged.
Ryan said, "Good. Now follow me to the next testing ground."
Zoe had barely taken two steps when she suddenly staggered and collapsed.
Luckily, Shawn had been keeping a close eye on Zoe. The moment she collapsed, he immediately scooped her up into his arms. He asked, "Sir, may we have a short break before the next challenge?" He was requesting the break for Zoe.
Ryan shot him down without hesitation. "Do you think the enemy would give you a break on the battlefield?" he barked.
That single remark from Ryan left Shawn speechless.
Fortunately, the next location was quite a distance away. So everyone piled into the back of a truck for the ride. Zoe could take a rest in the truck.
As the truck jolted along, Zoe slowly stirred awake, her head still spinning.
Shawn asked, "Are you feeling any better? Honestly, I think you should drop out of the challenge right now." He couldn't bear the thought of Zoe risking her life just for glory.
But Zoe refused.
