Sophia's heart leapt into her throat as she witnessed the scene. She said, "Zoe, if you're hell-bent on getting yourself killed, don't drag anyone else down with you!"
She had two packs of explosives planted here. If they went off, they would blow anyone to smithereens. This deadly trap was set specifically for Zoe. But she never expected Shawn would join Zoe in this operation.
"Stop the competition immediately!" Sophia commanded Ryan.
But Ryan was a real stickler for the rules. He said, "On the competition grounds, the only way to stop the match is if a contestant withdraws. Otherwise, no one can call it off."
Aileen barked over the walkie-talkie, "Can't you just make a new rule? No teaming up! Make them complete their missions separately!"
Ryan remained silent, refusing to bend the rules.
The others were just there for the spectacle.
One of the onlookers sneered, "See that? Women are nothing but trouble. The legendary warrior may be formidable, but too bad he's fallen for such a troublesome woman."
"She'll be the death of him," another scoffed.
"Not a bad thing. Without him around, both Clusia and that woman would be as good as in our pockets," a third added with a malicious grin.
They all understood each other perfectly and burst out laughing. "Stupid men!" they jeered.
Zoe tuned out all the mocking voices around her. Once they arrived, she told Shawn to set her down.
One of the onlookers asked, "What's that woman up to?"
Another scoffed, "Oh my god, she's trying to act tough and defuse the bomb!"
A third mocked, "Does she think this is some kind of game?"
Someone else added with a smirk, "She'll see it's not so fun when it blows up."
Hearing those comments, Sophia grew increasingly anxious for Shawn. Unable to hold back, she shouted again, "Zoe, if you want to get yourself killed, fine. But don't drag Shawn down with you! He's Clusia's legendary warrior, not yours alone!"
Zoe tuned out Sophia completely and crouched down to meticulously examine the ground.
Defusing mines was all about analyzing soil conditions. There was a world of difference between disturbed and undisturbed soil.
The bomb planters were meticulous, covering the mines with aged soil to conceal any trace of disturbance. But such tricks were useless against someone as sharp-eyed as Zoe.
With just one glance, she could tell there was a mine buried here, a pressure-release type. For Zoe, disarming this kind of mine was a piece of cake.
Without hesitation, she quickly brushed away the surrounding soil, exposing the mine for all to see.
Everyone watched Zoe's every move with bated breath.
"A woman playing bomb expert? What a joke!" one onlooker jeered.
"No gear and she's defusing a bomb? She's got a death wish!" another mocked.
"Get on with it! She's taking forever!" a third shouted impatiently.
Just as the crowd grew restless, Zoe suddenly stood up, holding the bomb in her hand.
One person shouted, "Holy crap!"
Another yelled, "It's gonna blow!"
A third cried out, "Hit the deck!"
Those closest to Zoe froze in terror when they saw her holding the bomb. They all thought she had a death wish. Some of the more timid ones had already dropped to the ground, covering their ears.
Sophia was among them. She knew all too well the devastating power of those double-packed explosives.
Zoe hurled the bomb straight at the gawking crowd.
The onlookers freaked out, screaming their heads off as they scrambled to get away.
The bomb rolled across the ground a few times, but nothing happened. It didn't go off at all.
One onlooker gasped, "It didn't blow?"
Another stammered, "Did she defuse it?"
"Shawn, I'm spent. Keep carrying me," Zoe said. Just a moment ago, she was all cool and badass, but the next she was suddenly wilting like a delicate flower.
Whether she was faking it or genuinely exhausted, Shawn immediately scooped her up without hesitation. He was more than willing to be her legs. Wherever Zoe pointed, Shawn would carry her.
Throughout the entire bomb-defusing process, Shawn never intervened. He had truly placed his life in Zoe's hands.
Zoe didn't drop the ball. Her bomb-defusing speed kept getting faster, leaving the onlookers utterly dumbfounded.
Only then did Sophia realize that Zoe had done it on purpose.
