With everyone watching, Zoe not only engaged in a public display of affection with Shawn but also showed off her skills. She earned roaring applause from the crowd. This performance was bound to make her famous overnight.
Sophia never expected that the murderer Aileen and her plot would become the very stepping stone for Zoe's rise to fame. She thought that no one would ever believe it if they heard!
Before the surveillance monitors, Aileen stood there, her face twisted with livid fury. She cursed inside, 'Damn that Zoe! Flaunting her PDA again. Would it kill her to stop showing off for once?'
Unlike the others who only cared about self-preservation, Zoe and Shawn cleared every mine along their path, and they did it faster than any of the previous contestants. Once again, they stole the show and came out on top in this assessment.
Aileen, unwilling to concede, snapped at Ryan, "Let it slide this time, but next time, I want her dead, no excuses!"
Ryan said, "We're only here to ensure a fair competition. If a contestant dies, it must be because she courted death herself."
Aileen was furious at his words. She snapped, "I didn't pay you this fortune to listen to this rubbish! If you can't meet my demands, I'll have you all banished to some godforsaken backwater to eat dirt!" With that, she slammed the walkie-talkie down.
Sophia decided to stay. She thought, 'Zoe is acting so arrogantly. I can't let her keep stealing the spotlight like this. It'd be best if she perished here, once and for all.' Sophia tracked down Declan, her admirer.
Declan greeted, "Ms. White."
Sophia said, "You've utterly failed me. Why isn't Zoe dead yet?"
Declan looked utterly helpless. He replied, "Honestly, I never expected Zoe could defuse mines. Don't worry, Ms. White. In the next round, she's as good as dead."
Sophia asked, "What's the next competition?" This time, she vowed to take charge of the plan herself. She thought, 'There's no way I'm letting Zoe slip away again.'
Declan said, "They'll have to break through a real hail of bullets to survive."
Sophia's eyes gleamed with malicious delight. "So, actual live fire? Real bullets?" she asked.
Declan said, "That's right. They have to fight their way through real gunfire and obstacles to reach the finish line. Only then will they pass the assessment. They're already running on fumes. At this point, getting through this stage is next to impossible."
Sophia seized Declan's forearm and asked, "I want Zoe dead. Can you make that happen?"
Declan smirked with a sly glint in his eyes. He said, "Ms. White, just say yes to dinner with me, and I'll make your wish come true."
"Deal!" Sophia agreed without hesitation. She thought, 'Just one dinner for Zoe's life? What a steal.'
The seven remaining contestants arrived at the location for the third challenge. Everyone lined up in formation, silently awaiting their assessment.
Ryan strode up and barked, "Are you all ready?"
"Ready!" the contestants shouted in unison.
Shawn looked at Zoe and said, "How are you feeling? If it's not working out, you can quit the competition."
Zoe shook her head and said, "It's nothing. This little challenge won't stop me." Even though she insisted she was fine, her face was ghostly pale.
Shawn's heart ached, yet he couldn't force his decision on Zoe. All he could do was hope she'd come through unscathed.
Ryan announced, "There are no rules for this round. Run the gauntlet of challenges. If you make it to the other side and retrieve your nation's flag, you pass."
As they surveyed the path ahead, the contestants saw that it was packed with over a dozen different challenges. They thought, 'If it were just about physical skills, these challenges wouldn't be difficult.
'But this is the Hunter Tournament. Nothing here would ever be that straightforward.'
Shawn tried once more to persuade Zoe. He said, "If you want to quit, that's fine. I'll uphold Clusia's honor for us both."
Zoe managed a weak but playful smile and asked, "Shawn, if I win this round, what kind of reward are you going to give me?"
Without hesitation, Shawn cupped Zoe's face and captured her lips in a decisive kiss. The kiss held no ulterior motives, just a solemn promise. "If you win, name your reward," he vowed.
"You said it!" Zoe said, beaming with delight.
Shawn pulled Zoe close, holding her tight as he whispered in her ear, "Stay alive." That was all he asked of her.
