As the legendary warrior, Shawn naturally anticipated the actions of those two individuals.
Without exchanging a word, Shawn and Zoe moved in perfect sync before the hail of bullets swept toward them. In a flash, Shawn tossed Zoe upward.
As Zoe dodged the gunfire, she grabbed the collar of the ambusher on the wall. She yanked him down and used him as a human shield, letting him take the bullets for her.
The man, thrown off balance and never expecting an injured Zoe to fight back, paid for underestimating her with his life.
Meanwhile, Shawn spun around and dragged the attacker over. Shawn slammed his fist into the attacker and turned him into a shield as well.
Countless bullets riddled the two would-be assassins.
After watching two of their teammates get taken down in an instant, the remaining four froze. No one dared to make another reckless move. They pondered, 'If we run, maybe we still have a shot at winning. But if we charge in now, that's suicide.'
In a rare moment of clarity, the four gave up trying to take down Zoe and Shawn, focusing instead on beating them to the finish line.
Shawn caught Zoe mid-air and, with her, vaulted over the six-foot wall, then pressed forward to face the next challenge.
Sophia had been glued to the competition live stream. After watching Zoe cheat death time and again, she couldn't sit still any longer. She immediately called Declan.
Sophia demanded, "Didn't you say all the firepower would be aimed at Zoe? Then why is she still alive and kicking?"
Declan said helplessly, "I hired elite marksmen from the military. By all rights, they shouldn't be missing."
Sophia snapped, "These are your so-called elite marksmen? Not a single one of them was any good when it counted!"
Declan asked, "What do you want me to do then?"
Sophia replied, "I'll oversee this personally."
Sophia knew she couldn't get on the field herself; otherwise, she would take care of Zoe with her own hands.
But seeing that Zoe was sticking to Shawn's side, Sophia knew that taking Zoe out without harming Shawn would be next to impossible. So she decided to watch from the spot to make sure nothing went wrong.
"That area is dangerous," Declan said.
Sophia insisted, "I need to see with my own eyes that your men are not slacking off." She was dead set on seeing Zoe dead; there was no way she'd let anyone mess this up.
With no other choice, Declan reluctantly led Sophia, her face concealed, toward the machine gunners' position.
Desperate to impress Sophia, Declan gritted his teeth and barked out the order, "Listen up! All of you, target that woman. She must be dead before the competition ends!"
These gunners originally thought it was overkill to send so many people just to take out a single woman. But having the target right in front of them and still failing to take her out was incredibly frustrating.
Zoe and Shawn seemed to have a sixth sense, anticipating every shot fired at them. It made the gunners miss their mark again and again.
One gunner growled, "Seriously, do those two have eyes in the back of their heads? How do they dodge my shots every single time?"
Another said, "It's not like you're the only one with perfect aim. I'm a damn good sniper too, but I still can't bag this target. What a disgrace."
These gunners had always been arrogant about their shooting skills, but Zoe and Shawn had just handed them a humiliating defeat.
With both a hefty bounty and their pride at stake, they didn't need Sophia's urging. Every last one of them was now laser-focused, determined to take Zoe down with a single shot and prove themselves.
Bullets whizzed past, grazing Zoe's nose by a hair's breadth. The muzzle flashes reflected in her eyes, blazing like ignited flames.
"Are you okay?" Shawn asked, his voice tight with concern.
Zoe clung to Shawn's back and said, "I can feel their scopes on me. Maybe they're after me. Shawn, put me down, or you'll get caught in the crossfire." She meant every word this time.
