Zoe paused for a moment before saying, "I'm okay. It just hurts a bit."
Shawn ignored her protests and, without another word, scooped Zoe onto his back. "Don't say another word. Trust me!" Shawn said firmly.
Those two words made Zoe swallow all her protests. 'Alright!' Zoe thought. 'Fine, I'll trust him this once.'
The electric fence stood over six feet tall, topped with barbed wire. Anyone who touched it would be instantly electrocuted, with no chance of survival.
Shawn tossed a branch, and in an instant, it was reduced to charcoal. "This is an electric fence. There's no way you can get us both across while carrying me," she said.
It wasn't that Zoe didn't trust Shawn. She just couldn't see how this could possibly be done. Shawn remained unfazed. "Trust me, then do exactly as I say," he said; his tone brooking no argument.
Shawn abruptly grabbed Zoe's hands and swung her around. Zoe instantly grasped Shawn's intention. He was planning to throw her over the fence.
"No! If you die, there's no way I could go on living!" Zoe blurted out before she could stop herself. She was surprised by her own reaction.
'I can't believe I've come to value Shawn more than my own life. When did this even happen? How could I not have noticed this before?' Zoe wondered.
Zoe had clawed her way out of countless bloodbaths before. Survival and money were the only things that ever mattered to her.
But now, she realized there was something that mattered more than money, even her own life.
"Go first. I'll be right behind you," Shawn said. Just as Zoe was flung through the air, Shawn planted his foot against a nearby pillar and, using brute force, vaulted right over the six-foot-high electric barrier.
Zoe landed squarely in Shawn's waiting arms. To her surprise, Zoe landed squarely in Shawn's waiting arms. Shawn held Zoe tight, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
'God knows, that move was a real gamble for him. Luckily, my gamble paid off. We both survived,' he thought.
Suddenly, a series of deafening explosions erupted. Massive explosions rocked the air.
On the other side of the electric fence, flames shot up into the night sky. But here, Zoe and Shawn were locked in a tight embrace.
After everything they'd been through, this journey was definitely worth it. At least now they both understood just how much the other meant to them.
Zoe noticed a crowd of people heading their way. For the first time, she finally let herself relax. At last, she made peace with it.
'So what if they find out? It's not like I still want to kill Shawn anyway. Fine, I might as well face our relationship and my true identity head-on,' she thought.
'I wonder if Shawn will be happy or surprised when he finds out I'm Firefox,' Zoe thought.
"Congratulations to both of you. Zoe and Shawn! You're the joint champions of this year's Hunter Tournament!" someone in the crowd exclaimed.
At the sound of approaching footsteps, Zoe reluctantly released Shawn from her embrace.
Knowing she was injured, Shawn didn't hesitate. He scooped Zoe up protectively against his chest.
"Out of the way!" Shawn barked, determined to get Zoe the medical attention she needed.
Just then, someone in the crowd suddenly froze, staring at Zoe in shock. Zoe also saw the person. It was clear that she'd recognized who Zoe really was.
Just as Zoe was about to have her secret identity exposed before everyone, an unexpected turn of events occurred.
"Zoe, I'm going to kill you!" Aileen stormed over, her face flushed with rage.
Aileen spat, "Have you no shame at all?! Go die if you want, but why drag Shawn down with you? You selfish, vile woman!"
Watching Aileen's furious outburst, Zoe found her rather amusing. 'This airhead of a spoiled heiress couldn't have orchestrated such intricate assassination schemes on her own. Looks like there's someone smarter pulling the strings behind her,' Zoe thought.
The thought hit Zoe all at once. 'Back then, I'd already suspected that shadowy figure was Sophia, but I just couldn't be sure. Maybe it's time to finally reveal the truth,' Zoe thought.
"Ms. Carleton, how does it feel to be Sophia's pawn in her little game?" Zoe taunted with a mocking smile.
Aileen was in a frenzy of rage, beyond caring about discretion. Provoked by Zoe, Aileen immediately blurted out. "That stupid bitch Sophia! How could I possibly let her use me?!"
Shawn ignored her protests and, without another word, scooped Zoe onto his back. "Don't say another word. Trust me!" Shawn said firmly.
