At this moment, Zoe wasn't feeling a flutter in her heart; she was excited. 'This is truly a perfect opportunity to strike. If I act now, Shawn has a 90% chance of dying,' she thought to herself.
But in the end, Zoe didn't move. It wasn't the right time, and besides, considering that Shawn had spent the entire day accompanying her, Zoe decided to let him live a little longer.
The two of them went through all the high-altitude rides in the amusement park.
Shawn didn't have much of a reaction, while Zoe fully embraced the role of a thrill-seeking yet timid girl. Because of this, Shawn gradually grew accustomed to her closeness and touches.
But that was far from enough. To make Shawn completely let his guard down, Zoe needed to keep up the act.
"Mr. Ludwig, look over there. It's Scary Farm. Let's go to Scary Farm," Zoe said, pulling Shawn toward the entrance without waiting for his consent.
After they bought their tickets and joined a line of couples waiting to enter, Zoe suddenly sensed Shawn's reluctance.
She felt the grip on her wrist tightening, but when she looked at him, she saw no signs of discomfort. 'Am I overthinking this? Of course. Mr. Ludwig is a legendary warrior; he can't be afraid of it,' she thought.
As they moved forward, Zoe clung to Shawn's arm. "Mr. Ludwig, you have to protect me. I'm scared," she said in a small voice.
Shawn's deep voice rumbled above her head. "If you're scared, maybe we should stop here." He was about to turn around and leave when Zoe grabbed his arm again.
"Mr. Ludwig, I'm scared, but I really want to go in," she insisted.
As they were carried along by the crowd into Scary Farm, the atmosphere grew cold and oppressive. The lights were off, and only a few neon lights flickered to create an eerie ambiance.
Screams echoed from ahead, like people being chased by monsters, and the tension was palpable among the crowd.
At that moment, Zoe felt something brush against her face. She looked up to see a staff member dressed as a female ghost. Zoe wasn't afraid, but she distinctly felt her hand being squeezed painfully by Shawn.
'Could it be that Shawn is actually afraid of it? Really?' she wondered, her eyes widening in surprise. But the next second, she saw Shawn grab the staff member.
Zoe, who was supposed to scream in a frightened manner, forgot to make a sound. She realized that Shawn's face showed no signs of fear, proving that he wasn't scared of the ghostly staff.
'If he's not afraid of it, then it must be claustrophobia,' she thought. Zoe had heard of people developing psychological barriers due to certain traumas. In confined spaces, especially in the dark, claustrophobia could become more severe.
In an instant, Zoe had a new plan. She took advantage of the surging crowd, let go of Shawn's hand, and screamed, "Ah! Who are you? Mr. Ludwig, help me!"
"Zoe?" Shawn looked around, but she was nowhere to be seen. He turned around to see other couples behind him. They had been separated.
The image of Zoe's frightened face kept flashing in Shawn's mind. 'No. I have to find her quickly. It's so dark here; she'll definitely be scared,' he thought. Shawn composed himself and began to search for Zoe.
The dark, enclosed space put considerable psychological pressure on him. The environment itself wasn't terrifying, but because of his past dark shadows, Shawn's reactions became slightly sluggish, and his steps were heavy.
At that moment, Zoe had already found a good hiding spot, waiting for Shawn to appear. Her eyes were cold, devoid of any fear.
All her previous actions were meant to make Shawn let his guard down and get used to her presence. Only then could she approach him without triggering his subconscious reactions.
At this moment, Zoe was exploiting Shawn's weakness. Only when people are afraid do they lose the ability to think clearly, and their senses become dulled.
In such a state, if an assassination were to occur, she believed Shawn's abilities would be significantly diminished. Her chances of success would be as high as ninety-nine percent.
'Come on, Shawn, it all comes down to this,' Zoe thought to herself.
After Zoe waited for three minutes, Shawn finally appeared, heading straight toward Zoe's hiding spot.
Zoe adjusted the weapon strap on her wrist. It was a small crossbow launcher, concealed with three short arrows. Each arrowhead was tipped with poison; a single scratch on the skin would be fatal.
As Shawn came into Zoe's line of sight, a faint smile played on her lips. The moment had arrived.
Her thumb exerted a slight pressure on the launch button of the crossbow. With just a push, the poisoned arrows would pierce through Shawn's neck, ending his life.
At that moment, Zoe's eyes were ablaze with barely contained excitement.
'Almost there, just one step away, and I can complete the assassination of Mr. Ludwig, announce Shawn's death, leave Clusia, and continue being the Queen of Mercenaries,' she thought.
Zoe's hand on the launch button was poised to press down the moment Shawn entered her range. Just as she was about to press the button and take Shawn's life, a voice rang out in desperation. "Zoe? Zoe, where are you?"
Shawn's claustrophobia had flared up again. Overwhelmed by fear, he had no choice but to slow down. Even though he was trying to hold it together, beads of sweat had already formed on his forehead. But still, he kept calling out for her, searching desperately.
Zoe's entire body tensed, and her hand froze in place.
With her excellent night vision, Zoe immediately noticed Shawn's discomfort, his physical distress, and the worry etched on his brow.
She knew that despite his fear, Shawn was still coming for her. She couldn't help but curse under her breath.
Especially when Shawn had to stop every few steps to take deep breaths, only to continue moving forward without hesitation the next moment, which touched her more.
"Zoe?" Shawn's calls echoed in her ears. Zoe suddenly let her arm drop, feeling deflated.
She inwardly berated herself. 'Damn it. I'm the Queen of Mercenaries, Firefox. When did I start resorting to such despicable tactics to deal with enemies? How disgraceful.'
This was indeed the perfect opportunity for Zoe to kill Shawn, but the act itself felt dishonorable.
'I need to kill Shawn fairly and squarely, not like this,' Zoe murmured inwardly, and she holstered her weapon.
It was at that moment that Shawn, who had been able to walk normally moments ago, suddenly dropped to one knee.
He clutched his head, seemingly in great pain, and his breathing became rapid. His claustrophobia had intensified.
