Eunice's heart leaped with excitement as she quickly sent the money and Zoe's personal information to the international email address. She then immediately deleted the text message and all evidence.
Her heart was racing, but not out of fear or nervousness. She was thrilled.
'The mercenary from overseas must be really formidable. At least compared to Zoe, he'd have the upper hand. After all, no matter how capable Zoe is, she can't outmatch a mercenary. Unless Zoe is even stronger than the mercenary I hired,' Eunice thought to herself.
She had already checked on a specialized website: Mercenary Caesar ranked 108th on the global mercenary list.
'Zoe, unless you're also a mercenary and ranked within the top hundred, you're done for this time,' she thought. Eunice was convinced that Zoe couldn't possibly be a mercenary and was certain that Zoe was as good as dead.
A few days later, at the Evans family dinner table, Sean announced some exciting news.
Eminence Nexus was recruiting fresh talent and had allocated a limited number of spots for a global Youth Entrepreneurship Competition to be held in Jelonsburg.
The competition was specifically targeted at teenagers, and those who succeeded would have the opportunity to join Eminence Nexus directly.
The organization was looking to identify business prodigies among the youth. Becoming a big shot at Eminence Nexus was an opportunity that everyone dreamed of.
In the Evans family, only Zoe and Eunice met the eligibility criteria, so Sean gave the hard-earned spots to his younger siblings. The competition attracted the attention of many major domestic companies.
Typically, anyone who placed in the top ranks in such a competition would become a sought-after talent in the business world.
Besides, the champion would have the qualifications to directly join Eminence Nexus.
Before the competition, Zoe and Eunice arrived together in Sean's car, and the rest of the Evans family was also present.
After all, it was rare for a family to have even one participant in such a major competition, but the Evans family had two, which naturally raised the family's expectations for the two children.
Zoe and Eunice went backstage first and greeted all the other contestants.
Eunice looked down on Zoe, thinking she didn't deserve to be on the same level as her and participate in the competition. But since Sean had arranged it, she had to reluctantly accept it.
Among the contestants were several students from Zoe's class, and they were not few in number. As soon as they had greeted each other, Cheryl, along with a few friends who had it in for Zoe, came over to cause trouble.
"Zoe, how do you even have the qualifications to participate in a competition like this? Do you really think you're capable?" Cheryl's words were dripping with sarcasm.
"Of course, she's not capable. A girl who grew up in a small town probably has never even seen 300 thousand, let alone invest it," one of Cheryl's friends chimed in.
"The Evans family is really going overboard. Even if they want Zoe to be famous, they shouldn't let her embarrass herself in a competition like this," another added.
"The Evans family doesn't care about embarrassment. Why should you? Eunice, are you planning to help this fool?" someone else asked.
Eunice, seeing that everyone was looking at her, decided to play along while still belittling Zoe. "Sean wants me to help Zoe a bit, but I know we can't cheat in a competition.
"Zoe, I'm really sorry, but you're probably going to have to rely on your own efforts from now on. But don't feel too much pressure.
"Even if you get eliminated in the first round, it's okay. At least you've participated, and that will look good on your resume."
Eunice's response was masterful. She hadn't directly insulted Zoe, but she had made it clear to everyone that Zoe was incompetent.
The crowd around them burst into laughter, convinced that Zoe was bound to lose.
Zoe remained unfazed, her expression blank, which only seemed to fuel the mockery around her.
"Zoe, I think you should just drop out of the competition now. Pretending to know something you don't is going to get you into trouble," one voice sneered.
"They'll definitely give her a few close-up shots in the highlights. Wonder how many points she'll score?" another chimed in.
"Definitely going to be dead last," someone else shouted, drawing a chorus of agreement from the crowd.
The jeers grew louder, with some even demanding that Zoe withdraw from the competition immediately.
But Zoe stood her ground, unshaken. The crowd's irritation grew, and their words turned even more biting.
"Hmph, just you wait. We'll crush you in the competition and see how high and mighty you can act then," one of them threatened.
"She's just good at putting on a show. Wait till she loses and see how she cries," another added, their words dripping with contempt.
The onlookers assumed Zoe's indifference was just an act, and they redoubled their efforts to belittle her. Eunice, watching from the side, felt a sense of twisted pleasure.
"Zoe, don't worry. I'm not as good as you," Mandy spoke up, the only one willing to defend Zoe openly.
Mandy had been pressured by her family to participate in the competition, and her business acumen was, to put it mildly, lacking.
Ever since Zoe had rescued her from the jaws of a cheetah during that wilderness survival trip, Mandy had come to see Zoe as a close friend. She couldn't stand seeing everyone gang up on Zoe and felt compelled to offer some comfort.
Zoe gave a slight nod in response to Mandy's words, acknowledging her support.
