Eunice felt like Zoe was deliberately humiliating her. After all the effort Zoe put into winning, she was giving up the spot—not even to her own younger sister who came in second. It was insulting.
Eunice felt the embarrassment of humiliation. 'Zoe, you are really something. I'd like to see how you're going to explain this to the family,' she thought.
In the evening, Zoe got home and was stopped at the door by Clara before she could even take off her shoes.
Clearly, Clara had already heard from Eunice about what happened at school during the day. Right then, she was furious, her voice shaking with anger as she said, "Zoe, what the hell is wrong with you?
"If you didn't want the Eminence Nexus spot, why did you cheat and play dirty to win the competition? You worked so hard for it, so why not just take the spot?
"At the very least, you could've given it to Eunice! Having someone from the Evans family in Eminence Nexus would've boosted our status in Jelonsburg like crazy.
"But y-you selfish, ungrateful girl! I could just kill you. I should've strangled you at birth! You gave such an amazing opportunity to join Eminence Nexus to some nobody from a third-rate family!"
Clara was so furious that she could barely control herself, her body shaking with rage. "Eminence Nexus! It's Eminence Nexus!" she shouted as if wanting to devour Zoe alive.
Just then, Zoe's three older brothers, Sean, Jacob, and Herbert, came downstairs. They'd overheard everything and were just as shocked.
"Mom, what did you just say? Zoe got into Eminence Nexus but gave the spot to some outsider?" one of them asked.
The three of them were stunned, struggling to believe what they were hearing.
"Yes! Don't ask me! Ask her yourselves! Why am I so unlucky? Why did I have such an ungrateful child? She easily gets into Eminence Nexus, and then... How am I supposed to maintain the family's reputation?" Clara cried out in despair, banging her chest.
"Zoe, what's going on?" Sean asked, fixing an inquisitive gaze on Zoe. It was indeed commendable that Sean, the eldest brother, could maintain his composure in the face of such a shocking event.
After all, joining Eminence Nexus was the dream of all five brothers of the Evans family. If one of them made it in, it would be a huge honor for the whole family. Eminence Nexus was their ultimate goal.
Now, that dream had landed in Zoe's lap, and it could elevate the Evans family to a whole new level. Maybe even open doors to get more family members into the Eminence Nexus down the road.
But now, to their surprise, Zoe had actually handed the spot to an outsider.
"It's nothing. I just didn't want the spot, so I gave it to a friend. That's all," Zoe replied nonchalantly.
Her casual response made Herbert lose his temper. He snapped, "Zoe, you've really let me down this time. Do you have any idea what it means to join Eminence Nexus?
"It's a world you'll never get into in your lifetime. And you're telling me you don't want the spot? That's insane."
"I think you're hopeless. You're out of your mind. I order you to get that spot back right now, or you're done," Jacob said bluntly, threatening her.
If Sean hadn't stopped him, Jacob probably would've rushed up and slapped Zoe.
Looking at her so-called family, who were angrily pointing fingers at her for making a decision she wanted, Zoe couldn't help but laugh.
She found it utterly ridiculous. "This is how you're going to act?"
She laughed and then coldly dropped a bombshell that made her brothers freeze. "It's just a spot in Eminence Nexus. I could get as many as I wanted. It's just one spot, and you think it's worth all this drama?"
If they hadn't treated her so badly from the start, she could've easily gotten the Eminence Nexus to give a hundred spots to the Evans family. They wouldn't have even been able to use them up.
The chance to get into Eminence Nexus was something everyone else would die for. But to her, it was just a worthless piece of paper.
