Matthew remained silent, downing another drink.
Just call it off. She's not the one you like anyway. Now you're free to marry Lily.
Another scoffed, "Cut the crap. Lily's fine as a mistress on the side, but she'll never be a Hughes. Even at her worst, Sophia is still the heiress of Hughes Corporation. A decade ago, that name carried serious weight in Capital City. And let's not forget the Whites backing her—Lily can't hold a candle to that, and you damn well know it."
Hearing this, Matthew poured another drink and downed it in one gulp. "Whatever. Sophia wants to break up? Like I give a damn."
Another man scoffed, "Matthew, just wait a few days—she'll come crawling back to you. Breaking up is just her playing hard to get. She's head over heels for you; hell, she even donated blood to Lily for you. What are you worried about? Hah!"
Exactly. Everyone knows Sophia would rather be Lily's stand-in than leave your side.
Hearing these words, Matthew's unease and panic instantly vanished. "Of course," he thought, "Sophia can't live without me. She'll definitely come back."
Matthew waited. He knew Sophia would come back.
Skye stepped into a quiet corner and dialed a number. The moment Felix heard her voice, he was thrown into utter turmoil, unable to compose himself for what felt like an eternity.
Felix blurted out, "Wait, wait! I'm coming right now—just wait for me!"
Felix, with red-rimmed eyes, threw on his coat and rushed out in a frenzy. He sped to the hospital, slapped himself hard across the face—just to be sure this wasn't a dream—then charged through the doors.
Felix couldn't believe it—Skye had just called him.
A whole decade... Had it really been that long?
Felix thought, "Ten whole years, yet her voice remains as enchanting as ever."
"There's no mistaking it—that's her! It has to be her!" Felix thought, his heart racing.
"She's back!" Felix thought.
"I always knew she was still alive!" Felix thought, his heart pounding with certainty.
No one could fathom the overwhelming surge of emotions that rocked Felix the moment he heard her voice on the phone.
"Skye!" Felix cried out, spotting the elegant woman at the doorway.
As Skye glanced back, she saw Felix—a strikingly handsome man, breathless, with his hair streaming behind him—rushing toward her.
The moment Felix caught sight of her, his eyes widened in awe. "She's breathtaking!" he thought. Even more stunning than before—a mesmerizing blend of mature allure, radiant beauty, and cool elegance.
Felix quickened his pace, barely containing his shock as he pulled Skye into a crushing embrace.
"Skye!" Felix cried out.
"Felix, it's really me," Skye said, feeling his arms tighten around her. With a resigned sigh, she gently patted his back.
Felix was a grown man—he knew he wasn't supposed to cry, but he just couldn't hold back his tears.
Felix choked out, "Skye! Where have you been all these years? Why didn't you come back? Why? Why?"
"Big Sis?" Sophia called out anxiously. Growing worried since Skye hadn't returned for a long time, she slipped away to look for her.
What met Sophia's eyes was a tall, broad-shouldered man holding her sister.
"Big Sis!" Sophia cried out.
Upon seeing Sophia, Skye told Felix to let go.
Felix shook his head, the joy still lingering in his heart, refusing to fade.
Felix thought, "My heart just won't settle."
"No, Skye," Felix said, his voice choked up. "I'm afraid this is just a dream. Let me feel your heartbeat."
Sophia clenched her fists and threw herself at him, landing punches without hesitation.
"Let go of my Big Sis! Can't you hear me? Let go! Let go now!" Sophia shouted.
Sophia thought, "How dare this shameless creep touch my sister? He's got no shame at all!"
Felix never expected such a young lady to pack such a punch.
Felix groaned, "Stop, stop! You little rascal, you really pack a punch. Oh, my back! My ribs!"
Skye gently ruffled Sophia's hair, a gentle smile on her face. She could tell Felix was just putting on an act, deliberately groaning in exaggerated pain.
Still, Skye said to Sophia, "Sophia, apologize to him. This is my friend Felix—now the renowned Dr. Rivers."
Felix quickly waved his hands. "No need, no need! Skye, you're giving me way too much credit with all this 'famous doctor' talk. Just look at my receding hairline—if you'd come back any later, you would've missed out on my last bit of dashing good looks!"
Skye smiled faintly. "Alright, I need you to check on my sister."
Felix said, "Skye, don't even say 'help'—your business is my business."
Skye said gently, "Sophia, go with him."
"Okay, sis." Sophia said.
An hour later, Felix walked into the office, test results in hand. Skye looked up anxiously. "How is she?" she asked.
Felix frowned deeply and set the test results aside.
His expression grew grave, a flicker of surprise crossing his face.
"Skye, the situation is serious. Since she's your sister, I'll be straight with you. She's likely experienced bullying in the past, which left her with deep psychological scars. Something must have happened recently that's alleviated some of that trauma, which is a good start. But I have to be clear: she's exhibited multiple suicidal tendencies before, and her personality remains quite obsessive."
Skye nodded at Felix, signaling for him to continue. "Psychological issues are usually something people have to work through themselves. As the saying goes, emotional wounds need emotional healing. I believe you can help her get better—what she needs most is your support and guidance. When you left, she was only fifteen. We don't know exactly what she went through, but it's clear that you were the trigger. She's highly sensitive, so I strongly advise you not to suddenly disappear from her life again, to avoid retraumatizing her."
In short, after being abandoned by her family, relentlessly bullied, and having her nerves constantly frayed by others, she was left emotionally battered and scarred all over, unable to bear the weight of it all.
Skye's gaze shifted from solemn intensity to a sharp, ruthless edge as she read the words "multiple suicide attempts" on the form. But that ruthless glint soon melted into heart-wrenching pain and overwhelming guilt.
