Jessica looked like she had something to say but kept hesitating, making everyone impatient. "Come on, Jess, out with it already! Who is it?"
Jessica hesitated, then said, "It's not that I don't want to tell you. I'm just afraid you'll end up getting hurt. After all, she's not someone you want to mess with."
"We're in the right—what's there to fear? Just tell us, who is it?" someone pressed.
Jessica dramatically revealed Skye's name, embellishing the details. After what happened last time, they already resented her, and now it turned out to be her doing again—she had truly gone too far.
An angry mob descended upon the Hughes residence, full of bluster and determined to seek justice.
When Skye heard from the butler that Linda had brought a crowd to the Hughes' front gate, she was about to have someone deal with it when it struck her—Richard's elderly mother, Eleanor. "Wait, didn't she just come by this morning, making a scene and demanding money?"
Still not satisfied with just sending her away, Skye had the butler call her back. The butler was confused, but didn't dare question her decision.
Grumbling under her breath, Eleanor marched back into the Hughes residence. But the moment she spotted Skye sitting on the sofa, her bluster instantly deflated.
Eleanor thought, "They must have called me back just to give me money."
"No matter how stubborn that wretched girl is, I'm still her own grandmother," she thought to herself.
After all, we're family. She wouldn't dare make too much of a scene, Eleanor thought.
Skye thought sarcastically, "Didn't Eleanor adore Linda like she was the perfect daughter-in-law?"
She'd make Eleanor target the very person she was most satisfied with.
"Here's $7,000. Do what I say, and I'll throw in another $2,800."
Without a moment's hesitation, Eleanor snapped, "Skye, I'm your own grandmother! How dare you treat me like this? You think you can buy me off with this pocket change? Am I some beggar to you?"
Eleanor thought bitterly, "Ever since my son married into wealth through Margaret, I've never lacked for money! If it weren't for that wretched girl Skye suddenly cutting off my allowance, would I, at my age, have to grovel before her like this?"
"Skye is truly as heartless and vicious as that woman!" Eleanor thought bitterly.
Skye swept an icy gaze over Eleanor and said coolly, "Seems money isn't an issue for you. Butler, show her out."
"You... you!" Eleanor trembled with fury. Seeing the butler approaching menacingly, she hastily backtracked, stuttering, "I—I—I'll do it! Just tell me what you want!"
Eleanor had no choice but to swallow this utter humiliation. Skye was simply too ruthless. When provoked, there was nothing she wouldn't do.
Eleanor knew exactly what Skye was capable of.
Skye looked at Eleanor and said coldly, "Linda and her relatives are at the front gate, making false accusations. I want you to make sure they never dare show up here again. Get rid of them, and the money's yours. But let me be clear—I'm not asking you to play peacemaker. I want to see blood spilled. Understood?"
Eleanor glared at Skye with venom in her eyes. "So this is what you want—to use me as your attack dog?"
Eleanor thought furiously, "And you want me to hit Linda of all people?"
This is insane—she's turning the whole family order upside down!
Eleanor thought furiously, "How utterly unfilial! She's turning everything upside down!"
To think she'd send me out to rough someone up!
"What do you take me for?!" Eleanor seethed.
"She's actually using me!" Eleanor seethed.
"Skye is truly an ungrateful wretch! A disgrace to filial piety!" Eleanor seethed.
Eleanor thought bitterly, "I'm flat broke now, can barely put food on the table, and to make matters worse, my son Richard is still stuck in the hospital recovering."
Eleanor clenched her fists and spat out, "Fine. I'll do it."
Eleanor clenched her fists and strode out with uncharacteristic vigor—her movements belying her age.
Linda's eyes lit up when she saw Eleanor—it was as if she had found a lifeline. "Mother-in-law must be here to take me home!" she thought, clinging to that hope.
"Mom, I—" *SMACK!* Before Linda could finish, Eleanor's palm struck her face with a sharp crack. "Linda!" she bellowed, "How dare you bring people here to the Hughes' house and cause trouble? You've got some nerve! And the rest of you—" her glare swept over them, "think you can pull some insurance scam right in front of me? You looking to die today?"
The butler couldn't believe how formidable the old woman was—even with so many people, they still couldn't handle her.
Meanwhile, Jessica sat waiting in a coffee shop, her face concealed by a mask.
Before long, a woman in sunglasses and a hat walked in, scanning the room cautiously.
Christina yanked off her hat and snapped, "You'd better hold up your end of the deal this time and bring what you promised. Otherwise... Jessica, you know what happens if you cross me."
Jessica smiled knowingly, pulled a file from her bag, and slid it across the table to Ms. Foster. "Ms. Foster, these are my documents. Please take a look."
Christina flipped through the pages, nodded in satisfaction, then pulled a card from her bag and tossed it onto the table. "Ten million—this intel is worth every penny. Jessica, are you absolutely sure Hughes Corporation knows nothing about this?"
Jessica smirked knowingly as she took the card. "Ms. Foster, rest assured—this information is absolutely confidential. I personally extracted it when I was in charge of the project, so there won't be any issues. This could determine the fate of Hughes Corporation. For something this critical, don't you think a mere $1.4 million is a bit too little?"
Christina narrowed her eyes and asked sharply, "What else do you want?"
Jessica smirked triumphantly, her face twisted with greed. "Ms. Foster, when Hughes Corporation goes under, I want my share of the spoils. You know exactly what I mean."
Christina hesitated briefly, then conceded, "Fine. After Hughes Corporation goes bankrupt, all the Hughes family's cars and properties will be yours."
"Skye, think you're so tough, huh?"
Christina gloated inwardly, "Hughes Corporation is about to go bankrupt!"
Christina gloated to herself, "With the core trade secrets compromised, Skye, you don't stand a chance of turning the tables."
"Let's see how you wriggle out of this one!" Christina thought.
"Just wait—I'll personally throw you all out on the streets," Christina thought.
"I'll make sure you stay crushed under my heel forever, Skye. You'll never get the chance to rise again—not in this lifetime."
Elated, Christina went shopping at the mall with her entourage in tow.
After a shopping spree, the group headed to a restaurant for dinner. Noticing Christina was in unusually high spirits, one of her friends couldn't help but ask, "You seem so happy today, Christina. Did something good happen?"
Christina smiled and said casually, "Oh, nothing special—just planning to acquire a company soon."
"A company? Which company are you talking about?"
Christina gave a faint, nonchalant smile, affecting indifference as she replied, "Haven't you noticed how well Hughes Corporation has been performing lately? I thought I might just... acquire it for fun."
One of Christina's friends exclaimed, "Oh my god! Christina, you're truly worthy of being the Fosters' heiress! Hughes Corporation has been thriving since its acquisition, but to you, it's just a casual whim. No wonder the Fosters are ranked third among Capital City's top five business families. We're green with envy!"
Christina, just a casual whim from you can decide the fate of an entire company! You're absolutely incredible!
One of Christina's friends said, "But I heard from my dad that the only reason Hughes Corporation is getting so much hype lately is because they have a really powerful backer. My dad even went to them personally to propose a partnership, but can you believe they actually turned him down? Seriously, don't they know what's good for them? What's so great about them anyway?"
Christina scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain. "Their success is sheer luck—hardly worth mentioning. But I've got what it takes to tear their company apart with a single move."
While Christina was still gloating and boasting about her abilities, the girl sitting behind her quietly pulled her hat lower, paid her bill, and slipped out of the restaurant.
The girl's slender, black-clad figure melted into the crowd. With one last glance at Christina—a sinister glint flashing in her eyes—she turned and disappeared.
