That day, Vivienne was heading to Dominic's office for their usual lunch date when her mother ambushed her outside the Ashford building.
Dominic had mentioned he was going head-to-head with Carrington Industries on several major contracts lately.
The Carringtons were old money, but they'd never adapted to changing markets. Business had been stagnant for years.
Dominic used to throw them bones out of respect for Vivienne, but now that she was cutting ties with her family, those days were over.
Seeing her mother's slightly desperate appearance, Vivienne could tell the company was in serious trouble.
"Viv, honey, I know we messed up. Please come home with me?"
Afraid Vivienne might refuse, she rushed on: "Your dad, Cameron, and I—we finally get it. We're shipping Leona off in a few days. She'll be completely out of our lives. Can you find it in your heart to forgive us?"
Vivienne knew damn well her mother was only here because their empire was crumbling.
But this was still the woman who'd raised her for over twenty years. She couldn't bring herself to be cruel.
"Come talk to me after Leona's actually gone."
She walked away without another word.
Dominic rounded the corner just as Vivienne approached.
"God, I missed you." He pulled her into his arms immediately.
Vivienne still couldn't figure out why he'd become so possessive since her discharge. He'd literally panic if he woke up and she wasn't there, like he was constantly expecting her to vanish.
"Let's grab food. I'm pretty free these days, so I can hang out with you more."
"Sounds perfect."
Down on the street, Leona had secretly followed her mother and overheard everything. Learning they planned to abandon her for Vivienne sent rage coursing through her veins.
Later, when she spotted Vivienne leaving the building looking completely carefree, something inside her snapped.
Looking at Vivienne's perfect life compared to her own desperate situation, rage consumed her completely.
"This is all because of you! Why couldn't you just stay dead?!"
She floored the gas and aimed straight for her target.
Back in his office, Dominic felt oddly anxious. He should've made Vivienne stay. She'd barely been gone ten minutes and he was already missing her.
He called her phone.
"Hey babe, come back and—"
"Is this her emergency contact? She got hit by a car, there's so much blood, corner of Fifth and Main, you need to get here NOW..."
A stranger's voice cut him off. Car accident?
How could Vivienne be in an accident? He'd rewritten their entire story. Why was she still in danger?
Panic took over as he raced out of the building.
At the scene, seeing Vivienne lying in a pool of blood nearly broke him. He knelt beside her, touching her face with shaking hands. "Viv, wake up, look at me..."
He sobbed uncontrollably.
When the ambulance finally arrived and rushed her to the hospital, Dominic sat outside the OR in a complete daze. He didn't even respond when police tried to question him.
Only when they said Leona's name did reality come crashing back.
A month later, Leona was behind bars, his revenge against the Carringtons was complete—they'd declared bankruptcy—but Vivienne still hadn't woken up.
