Hearing police sirens outside, I felt relieved. Luckily, when I contacted property management, I'd also called cops about someone breaking in.
"I told you, I'm the only one on this house's deed, and this was my pre-marriage property bought with cash. No problem there."
"The other side brought tasers and knives, beat up my whole family like this. I want to charge them with attempted murder!"
Vivian waved her hand: "No, officer, this is my family's property—my husband's!"
There were cameras in the room and hallway. The cops didn't buy Vivian's bullshit and soon took us to give statements, while Vivian and the bodyguards got dragged into interrogation rooms as suspects.
"You say this is your husband's property. What proof do you have?"
"She hasn't worked since marrying my husband, has zero income. This house was obviously bought with my husband's money. Now that they're divorced and she got nothing, the house is rightfully mine."
If Lincoln hadn't said he couldn't stand to see me work hard and just wanted to take care of me, I never would have given up so many job offers to be a stay-at-home wife.
My expression was mocking: "This house is my pre-marriage property bought with cash, and my husband and I are still in the divorce cooling-off period. This woman has been shacking up with my husband for years and had his kids."
"They're basically common-law married. I want to charge them with bigamy!"
Vivian had assumed the house was Lincoln's and now freaked out, immediately demanding to call Lincoln for bail.
After she finished, the cops spoke before hanging up:
"Sir, you're suspected of cheating and assault. Get to the station within 24 hours."
The next day, when Lincoln showed up at the station, he got dragged straight to interrogation.
"Are you guilty of cheating? Do the kids your wife mentioned exist?"
The Hayes family had been powerful for years with government connections already set up, so he thought this trip was just for show. He didn't expect to get grilled by some small-time cop.
Having been in charge for so long, how could he stand being questioned like this? He immediately lost his shit:
"Where's your boss? What garbage are you spouting?"
The police chief sweated and uncuffed Lincoln. "Sorry, Mr. Hayes. The rookie didn't know better and got confused."
Lincoln frowned and had his assistant wipe the dust off his hands before asking: "Where's my wife?"
The chief smiled and opened the door: "We'll release Miss Vivian right away. Slander, pure slander. She and Miss Carter just had a little misunderstanding—we'll sort it out."
"No, I meant Sophia—"
I stood in the lobby, smiling as I held up my phone: "Really? But state investigators are coming soon. It's not your call anymore."
A small city police station definitely couldn't contain Lincoln, but I'd already submitted evidence of Vivian's embezzlement and the Hayes family bribing officials to the state court.
The chief was shocked, grabbed my phone and smashed it on the ground. Lincoln looked at me, pissed:
"Vivian acted stupid—having her apologize should be enough. Why did you make such a big deal out of this?"
"I won't hold this against you. I can remarry you, as long as you apologize to Vivian first."
Though the phone was trashed, the footage had already been livestreamed. The arrogant behavior of Lincoln and the chief caused a shitstorm.
A few days later, the court heard the case. Lincoln denied the affair in court.
But unexpectedly, the lawyer pulled out his paternity test: "Do you still want to argue?"
He looked at Vivian in disbelief. Vivian panicked:
"I, I didn't mean to. I was just scared you wouldn't recognize them as heirs—I wanted to secure something for the kids."
Lincoln swallowed his anger, couldn't deny it anymore.
But before he could get his head straight, I laughed coldly as evidence of him bribing officials for projects also got released.
Next came evidence of embezzlement and driving employees to suicide.
Each piece was solid proof. He looked at me in disbelief:
"Sophia Carter, are you really this cold-blooded?"
