Meanwhile, I was on the other side of the world.
Taking a guy in a wheelchair for a stroll.
Yep, under the blazing sun, I was busting my ass pushing him while he just chilled in his chair sipping juice.
I wiped the sweat off my face, totally annoyed:
"Preston, I've been pushing your lazy ass around for half an hour! Can I get a freaking break?"
"Oh, okay then."
Preston's face fell as he looked down at his legs with this dramatic sigh:
"You're right, it's my fault. I just haven't been outside in so long... I should be grateful for even thirty minutes, shouldn't I?"
Looking at his puppy dog expression made me feel like total crap.
"Preston, you're still such a manipulative little shit. If you hadn't saved my life, I'd totally kick your ass right now..."
I grabbed the wheelchair handles and picked up the pace.
To be exact, it was Preston's sister who saved me.
The second I got wheeled into the ICU, I saw that familiar face. Paisley rolled her eyes at Vivian, then turned to me.
"My brother sent me. He heard about Cross's huge bounty and told me to do the surgery."
In the whole city and surrounding areas, there weren't many people who could match that heart. But as long as I was around, Preston wasn't taking any chances.
Paisley gave Vivian an artificial heart, then secretly had me smuggled out of the city. She faked my death certificate and cremation records to fool Damien.
I asked Preston why he didn't come himself—wasn't he supposed to be some hotshot surgeon?
Preston pointed at his legs.
"Went mountain climbing a while back. Fell off a cliff. My legs are still fucked up."
I opened my mouth but didn't say anything.
Never thought Preston would save my ass.
He was my underclassman in college. We met when we joined the same research project.
Then we became friends working under the same professor.
Right after graduation, when he was heading overseas for grad school, he confessed his feelings.
Back then I was totally obsessed with Damien. I shut Preston down hard.
"Preston, I have a boyfriend. If you're thinking about me that way, we should stop talking."
Preston's eyes went red as he mumbled: "Then I hope you're happy."
I was dead certain: "I will be."
Those words, after all these years, hit me like a brutal slap in the face.
When we met again, Preston's first words were:
"Riley, damn. What the hell happened to you?"
Since he'd saved my life, I bit my tongue.
Preston shook his head with a sigh.
"Come on, I literally saved your ass. Don't I get some kind of thank you?"
I couldn't help rolling my eyes.
"As long as you don't pull some cheesy 'repay me with your body' bullshit, I'll do whatever."
Preston went quiet for a few seconds, then let out this soft laugh:
"I want you to see every ocean in the world with me."
Back in college during a team retreat, our group leader asked what we all wanted to do.
I pointed at the ocean on the projector screen and grinned: "Me? I'm gonna see every ocean on the planet and be totally free!"
Back then I was fantasizing about sitting on beaches with Damien, sipping drinks and living the dream.
Never imagined I'd end up in hell instead.
These past five years, I hadn't seen a single ocean. I'd forgotten what freedom even felt like.
