Blake didn't expect to see me here. So his anxious face froze for a moment.
My friend said sarcastically:
"Well, well, if it isn't the man Ms. Winters picked up."
"Blake, tell us—did she pick you up in bed?"
Blake didn't get angry. His eyes lingered on me before he walked over and scooped up his crying daughter.
He gently wiped the little girl's tears, getting snot all over his shirt.
Blake, who was always a neat freak, didn't even flinch.
"Daddy, they're mean! They made Mommy cry!"
Right on cue, Celeste started sobbing softly.
She buried her face in Blake's arm, shot me a challenging look, then whimpered.
She sobbed: "Blake, forget it. Don't defend me or blame Miss Reed."
"How could I deserve that bag?
When I was her assistant, just carrying it for her a few times was enough for me."
Blake looked at me with disappointment.
"If you're upset, take it out on me. Don't bother them."
"My daughter's mother deserves whatever she wants."
Since when did Blake become so protective?
He knew if he let me vent, I might back off.
I remembered that dinner years ago.
A drunk business partner kept forcing drinks on me.
Normally I would've kicked him out.
But Blake said:
"Just bear with it a little longer. This deal means everything to me."
That night, I drank until my stomach bled.
Blake had his driver take me to the hospital so he could stay and sign the contract at once.
Later, for long-term profits, he never even let them apologized.
Was the difference between love and indifference this obvious?
When I didn't respond, Blake repeated himself.
I snapped back and pointed at the bag on the counter.
"Fine. Want it? Trade me with that plot of land up north."
I thought Blake would refuse.
That land was his last bargaining chip.
But his voice came from above my head.
"Deal. I'll trade it."
I looked down, smiling until my eyes stung.
