The smile vanished from Blake's face instantly.
I clearly saw irritation and annoyance flash in his eyes.
Everyone in the room looked unsurprised.
Someone whispered to me:
"That woman uses her daughter like a leash.
If he's not home by eight, she drags the kid here to find him."
Another friend leaned in.
"Once during a business dinner, she dragged her daughter out of bed at midnight.
When the girl couldn't cry on command, she pinched her right in front of everyone.
Anyway, Blake was humiliated back then."
The room was dim—Celeste hadn't noticed me yet.
She pushed her daughter forward, and the little girl started crying on cue.
I remembered Blake doting on this daughter.
But now he didn't look at her or comfort her.
Just grabbed his glass, downing several gulps and said:
"Go home first. I want to stay a bit longer."
The crying stopped.
The little girl stood there with tears on her face, looking confused at her mother.
Celeste was stunned too.
This trick always worked before.
She rubbed her palms nervously, struggling to find words.
"Blake, I'm not here to drag you home.
I just afraid that... if you don't come back, our daughter won't go to bed either."
Blake pulled out a tissue and finally wiped the little girl's tears.
He asked:
"Daddy will come home in a bit, okay?"
The little girl was already nodding when her mother suddenly patted her back.
The nod turned into frantic head shaking.
Celeste forced a smile, trying to please him.
"Blake, see? She doesn't want to."
Something seemed off.
They didn't look as loving as the rumors claimed.
While I was lost in thought, I accidentally caught Blake's pitiful glance my way.
I couldn't understand why he was looking at me like that.
He chose this path, didn't he?
Following his gaze, Celeste finally spotted me.
