The private physician hurried in clutching a small case. Kneeling swiftly, he drew a blood sample and announced in a grave tone, "This is definitely her blood - it matches the type we tested this morning."
Reagan's face darkened with rage as he glared at the captured thug being restrained by a waiter. "Talk! What the hell did you animals do to my sister?" His murderous gaze looked ready to tear the man apart limb by limb.
The criminal babbled in defense, "We were just following Mr. Muller's orders to teach her a lesson! How were we supposed to know she'd freak out and jump in the river?"
My father paled, regret washing over him. "That was just angry talk! You were clearly on her payroll - how could you lay a finger on her?" His voice cracked. "If anything happens to my daughter, I'll bury every last one of you with her!"
Police sirens wailed outside as officers in uniform stormed into the restaurant. Seeing them, the captive panicked. Wildly pointing at Renata, he shouted, "She's the one who hired us! Not Miss Renesmee! We were just doing a paid job - if you want the mastermind, look at her!"
My family froze, all eyes locking onto Renata.
"That's a lie!" Renata burst into hysterical tears. "Mom, Dad, Reagan - you have to believe me! I've never seen these men before! They nearly raped me - you all saw it!" She gestured frantically at her torn dress. "They even stole the diamond dress I gave Renesmee! They probably got greedy, tried to run off with it, and attacked her when she tried to stop them!"
Her explanation sounded plausible. After all, they'd witnessed the assault themselves, and in their hearts, Renata could do no wrong.
"Enough crying," Reagan said gruffly, draping his jacket over her shoulders. "The police will sort this out."
Renata bowed her head, guilt and fear flickering behind her damp lashes.
When officers arrived, they took the suspect for questioning. The restaurant manager rushed in to report they'd found no sign of me yet.
Reagan climbed onto the windowsill, poised to jump. "I'm going after my sister myself."
Renata grabbed his arm. "Reagan, they said no one's in the river! She probably ran off with those men - she did hire them, after all."
This time, he wasn't buying it. Shoving her off coldly, he snapped, "That thug just said she didn't hire them - you did. And you keep blocking us from saving her while blaming her. Real suspicious." His voice turned to ice. "You're not going anywhere until we get answers. Stay put."
Renata trembled violently as Reagan leapt into the water. My parents' suspicious gazes remained locked on her.
"Renata," Mother said slowly, "last year you claimed Renesmee forced you to sleep with multiple men. She was punished, yet you still refuse to name names or give details. You even stopped us from going to the police to 'protect your reputation.'" Her eyes narrowed. "Was any of that true? Or did you make it all up to hurt your sister?"
