Elise's POV
The air grew thick with tension as the butler from Louis's grandfather's estate entered, arms laden with documents.
"Sir," he began, his voice steady despite the weight of his words. "We've received the investigation results about the car accident. The truck driver was a fugitive wanted for murder. He insists he doesn't know why he drove into the villa district—claims it felt like someone was controlling him, forcing him to crash into Mr. Louis's car."
The butler hesitated before continuing, "Regarding the wedding incident three days ago, both surveillance footage and investigation confirm Mr. Louis simply lost his balance and fell."
Richard looked ready to collapse from rage. A servant hurried over with medication to steady him. When he finally caught his breath, his desperate eyes locked onto me, voice strained: "Elise, what will it take for you to leave Louis alone?"
Louis's POV
I surfaced from darkness like a drowning man breaking through ice. My head felt stuffed with cotton, sounds reaching me as if through water. But one thought pierced the haze with perfect clarity: Elise.
Before I even knew where I was, the words tore from my throat: "Where's Elise? I need to see her." Not a command—a primal need.
Charlie, my assistant, hesitated before answering carefully, "Sir Louis... she's gone."
Gone? The word bounced off my fogged brain. How long had I been out? My thoughts moved through molasses.
"Gone?" My voice came out rough, disbelieving. "I nearly died, and she couldn't even stay to nurse me? Where the hell does she think she's going?" Rage and confusion warred inside me. "I don't care—go drag her back here! Now!"
Charlie opened his mouth, but my grandfather entered before he could respond.
"Louis, thank God you're awake. What would I have told your parents if—"
I tried sitting up, pain shooting through me. Then I froze.
"My legs..." I whispered. I couldn't feel them. They simply... weren't there.
Grandfather's face crumpled. "Your right leg was too damaged. The infection... they had to amputate to save your life."
"No." The denial ripped from me. "This is some sick joke, right?" But his devastated expression told the truth.
"I'll get you the finest prosthetics money can buy," he promised.
But all I heard was: Your life will never be the same.
"How?" I choked out.
"Louis," Grandfather said gently, "let's focus on—"
"Elise!" I roared at Charlie. "Why are you still here? Find her!"
Charlie glanced at Grandfather, who nodded dismissal.
"She left a month ago, Louis. Vanished without a trace."
My hands clenched into fists. "I never agreed to this! Why did she divorce me?" I hurled the nearest object across the room. "Why didn't you stop her?"
Grandfather sighed. "The Jefferson family curse, Louis. The doctors said you'd die unless the divorce was finalized. I didn't believe it either... until the papers were signed and you woke up."
"Bullshit!" I spat. "Her family's playing us. Her mother's still in our hospital, right? Tell Elise if she doesn't come back, I'll—"
"Her mother died, Louis." Grandfather's words hit like a sledgehammer. "The day you cut off her medication... she didn't last long. Didn't you know?"
The world tilted. I couldn't breathe.
"Let her go, son," Grandfather whispered. "Maybe you need to let yourself go too."
Louis's POV
The words turned my blood to ice. My face drained of color as reality crashed down.
