Elise's POV
I shot Steven a death glare. "Some mangy stray dog decided to make me its chew toy on the way here."
Steven just smirked, keeping his eyes on the road as we pulled out of the parking garage.
We were almost clear when I spotted Louis hobbling after us.
"Elise, wait! Who the hell is that guy? Get out of the car!"
Steven checked the rearview, his face unreadable. "You know this guy? Should I stop?" His foot hovered over the brake—barely.
I didn't even blink. "Never seen him before."
The corner of Steven's mouth twitched. "Then let's ditch him."
By the time we finished discussing the new project and returned, Louis was gone. I immediately tightened security—no unvetted visitors allowed.
Next day, Steven and I hit a restaurant to go over tender details.
And guess who crashed the party?
This time, Louis came armed with roses, dropping to one knee like some cheesy rom-com extra. "Elise, marry me again?"
The clueless crowd ate it up. Phones came out, people cheered—like they'd stumbled into some viral proposal moment.
I rose slowly, locking eyes with him. My voice could've frozen hell over. "Louis, you really love being your own biggest fan, don't you?"
Steven slid an arm around my waist before I could react. "Anderson, proposing to my fiancée? Bold move for a guy with one foot in the grave."
I was about to shove him off when he whispered, "Want to lose that flea-bitten mutt for good?"
My hand paused mid-push—then curled around his neck instead. "See this, Louis? That's your cue to exit stage left."
For half a second, I thought it worked. Then Louis swung at Steven.
Steven shoved me clear just as Louis lunged. They went at it like alley cats—Louis spitting venom between punches: "Hoffman! Your family's not even top-tier and you're stealing my wife? Our divorce isn't final—you're just the rebound!"
He turned to me, sneering. "You're not even worth it, Elise. Heard about the Jefferson curse? Run before it costs you your life."
Steven kicked his prosthetic leg out from under him. "Ah. So that's how that happened." He loomed over Louis. "Funny—if you hadn't screwed Elise over, you wouldn't be crawling now. What makes you think you can threaten me?"
The crowd caught on fast.
"Oof, the limping guy's the ex?" someone muttered.
"Girl, never take back a cheater," another advised.
"Take the guy with all his limbs," a third added, laughing.
The place was a circus now. Steven grabbed my hand and bulldozed through the gawkers.
Later, my grandparents went full lockdown mode with my security.
Too bad they didn't check the backseat. As I drove home, Louis emerged from the shadows behind me like some bad horror movie jump-scare.
