Just outside Shiganshina district.
Hannes had managed to make it to the docks while carrying Carla, where already a crowd of people were rushing and pleading to have a spot secured on the boats.
People have their belongings thrown into the canal below as the priority was only to allow for more space.
He looked back to make sure Eren and Mikasa were behind, which they were. He pushed through the crowd as Eren and Mikasa kept real close to not slip away and be left behind.
Armin turned back around and stood up to see if his friends were, and fortunately, they were, including their mother. But Armin noticed Eren had an abnormaly expression of fear on his face. As for Mikasa, she was more composed with some visible concern on her face.
Then a voice, one of an elderly man, called out, "Armin, sit down."
"It's Eren and his family grandpa." Armin said. The elderly man turned his head and noticed them, then turned back.
A guard of the Garrison regiment approached him. "Hold! State the names of these people." He said with an authoritative voice.
"It's the family of Grisha Jaeger!" Hannes replied instantly as he hoped to get Carla and the two on.
"The doctor? The one who saved us from a disease?" The soldier asked, his voice unchanged.
"Affirmative!" Hannes said as he still carried Carla. He could hear her groan in pain.
The guard inspected them all, and without any doubt or question, he nodded his head and waved his hand to grant them space on the boat.
Another soldier came in to help carry Carla on to the boat since they took notice of her current injured state. "Hannes! Where are you going?!" She called out to him as she was set down next to Eren and Mikasa.
"To do what I must." Hannes said as he gave the three a reassuring nod that they would be safe. He turned away and ran back towards the inner gate.
Outside, around the outer portions of the wall.
There, at the top of the wall close to the outer gate, was a person exiting the body of a titan with plating. "Bertholdt, are you alright?" A young boy with blonde hair asked.
The blonde haired boy had some visible marks on his face. "I'm...f...fine...tha..thanks Reiner." A slightly taller young boy, being Bertholdt said, who was exhausted.
A new voice then spoke up, "What are we supposed to do now since our mission has been compromised?"
"Are you suggesting we go back empty-handed, Annie?!" The blonde haired boy raising his voice over the sound of stomping and ear piercing roars.
She stared at him with dull eyes and a plain face. "What do you think? This giant hunk of metal might as well destroy everything."
Reiner stared at the tall red metal giant, how it stomped and ate those titans like they were only child's play. He felt waves of different emotions mixing up in him, fear, confusion, determination, and more. He had to push them all down because if he didn't, then it would bring him down.
He wasn't sure himself exactly what to do. He knew this was a hindrance in his mission. He had something to finish but not with this red demon standing in the way as it tore through Titans.
"We still cannot go back. Even if we tried, we will die either way, just like Marcel did." Reiner saw the way the titan was preoccupied with its surroundings, ignorant of anything else. He stared back at his teammates, one could say, and then looked at Bertholdt.
"Reiner?" Bertholdt asked, worried about what he was thinking.
"You're the one with the power of the colossal titan. You can destroy entire cities." Reiner said emptily.
"You want him to shift back after he just transformed and go through everything again?" Annie asked.
His face had no expression, but either way continued. "He doesn't need the body itself."
"He wants me to put more energy into the explosion." Bertholdt assumed that was what his friend was referring to, but he doubted this could pull off. He could only transform once a day or so. He knew this.
Annie approached Reiner and kicked at his shins, making him fall to the ground. "ARE YOU AN IDIOT REINER?!!" She shouted at him. "WE ALREADY LOST ONE, AND NOW YOU'RE SUGGESTING WE LOSE BERTHOLDT!!??"
Reiner tried to resist the pain as Annie kicked into his stomach. Several more, and he was spitting out his own blood. "If... we do nothing, then his death would've been for nothing..."
Bertholdt remained unsure of what to do as his friends argued with one another. He had stood by and watched this happen before. He contemplated it. If he could, if possible, do the transformation back again, there would be no guarantee he would live. But if he chose not to, then the metal titan would end up destroying everything, even the founding titan. Nothing would be gained, and only loss would come.
The two kept fighting and Bertholdt turned to the red demon, savagely tearing the titans apart.
"Guys...Reiner, Annie... stop." He said in a low voice that didn't reach his friends in any way.
The red demon perhaps just stopped the inconvenience when he struck his drill hands into the ground to produce a sinkhole underneath a small group of titans.
"Reiner, we'll go along with it, I'll do it." The blonde haired boy stared at him, surprised with a bloody face. He stood up thanks to his healing from being a shifter.
"Hm, alright then, what do you suppose we do then Reiner?" Annie asked, her attitude and personality taking a complete shift from just a minute earlier.
Reiner stared at the demon. He couldn't fathom how this thing even existed, but that didn't matter. What mattered more was neutralizing it, putting it down. If there was one thing that could possibly take it out, it was the explosion caused by the colossal titan's transformation.
He scanned it as fast as he could from the walls, a singular detail that could point it out to be a weak spot. "It's stomach, on the side....right there, if you could just time it right, maybe, just maybe....it could be done." He thought to himself.
"Hey, are you done?" Annie asked, although it sounded threatening.
"We need to get Bertholdt there." He pointed at the area that seemed more exposed than the rest of the Drill Titan's body. "If he can focus on his explosion more, than we could immobilize it, no...kill it."
Bertholdt and Annie turned their heads and found what Reiner meant. "One of us will have to transform and carry Bertholdt?" She asked.
"Right." Reiner nodded his head. "Soon there will not be enough titans to occupy itself with, we need to do this now."
The Drill titan himself was having its thrill of tearing and ripping the titans apart. Inside the drill titan, somewhere on the back of his neck. "Still got the little inner child in you, Steve." Chief Drill man said with sarcasm. He laid there in his chair, thinking about what had just happened. "That thing, he blew a hole in the gate of the wall, and then let himself be killed...why?" He pressed his fingers against his head, trying to grasp as to why it would let itself perish.
He could feel the occasional shaking of the pod, which is probably the Drill Titan grabbing another titan to eat. "These small ones are trying to eat us, of course they can't, but the big one just stood there, like it accepted its fate."
He watched through the perspective of Steve. "Could it have possessed intelligence?" Then a groan of discomfort came from Steve, one of him being slightly irritated. "What's going on? Tell me!"
The Drill Titan looked back and found a titan, a different one, with armor plating around it, trying to hold its tail down. "Huh?" Chief said in confusion.
He pulled on his long tail, but as he did, the armored titan let go of the tail. The Drill titan stumbled and then fell from the force of pulling its tail.
The massive red titan groaned once more in some slight pain. "He just has to do it...if she can bring him there, then we can do it...so we can accomplish our duties." Reiner thought himself from within the armored titan.
Among the few titans approaching the temporarily tripped Drill titan was a titan with a much more feminine appearance rushing to the side of it.
The Drill titan started moving, and he swung at the titans coming towards it. Among those was the female titan. Bertholdt clung onto it by a rope, which showed signs of being worn out. The female titan just narrowly avoided the massive arm coming at her.
The body was in reach to climb, and so the female titan did. She climbed the large torso while the drill titan shifted around.
The young boy hung on for as long as the ascend to the supposed weak spot was.
"Shit! Steve, stand up!" Chief Drillman yelled to the titan. Steve lifted his head up and found a small human laying on the right side of his stomach.
Chief Drillman was silent, a human. There was a human. "What? This isn't right." He said quietly in disbelief.
The human stared at the massive head of the beast staring down at him. "Just one more time is all I need." Bertholdt thought to himself. He had a cut across his arm, with blood slowly dripping.
The Drill titan reached over the boy while screaming in the process. A massive spike of energy was released. "Steve, wait!" Chief yelled as an explosion occurred and consumed the titan.
The titan roared with pain.
