Moments, a bit of time before before the explosion.
"Hurry!!" One soldier yelled as he tried to rush people to the safety of Wall Maria's territory. "Leave any belongings! Your lives matter more -" But then some awful thunderous footsteps were heard approaching behind.
The soldier was frozen in fear as a massive hand swiped and grabbed him. The soldier screamed for mercy, but what mercy was there when he was about to get eaten. So it was unfortunate that the soldier died, with agonizing pain at first from the hand crushing his body.
Very few people would surround themselves at the core of the danger to help others, but the number of those who would dare to face it, as slim.
The ship, being one of the last to leave, carrying the members of the Jaeger family still alive, with the father doing other business deep in the walls.
"Eren... are you alright?" His mother, Carla, called out to him with concern, holding him close to her with one arm and Mikasa with the other. As for the boy, he sobbed, tears slowly trickling down.
"I...thought I was going to lose you." Eren said, crying into her side as Carla did her best to comfort him. "Because I wasn't strong enough."
Carla stared down at Eren. Earlier, she did tell him leave when he and Mikasa were trying to pick the debris up, and all Eren wanted to do was to free her. "Eren... it didn't matter if you were strong enough. Your will alone was all that was needed."
The tears came less, and it was more of silence with the occasional silence as Carla looked down at him with a smile. Mikasa listened to Eren's sobbing, feeling like she could also help him find some comfort, but Carla was already doing just that.
Then, a roar, a mechanical one, echoed from the distance and startled everyone, destroying the small peace. Eren jolted upwards upon hearing it. "Wh..what's going on!?"
She gripped Eren and Mikasa tightly, despite how frightening it sounded. What mattered was the state of the two. "Don't pay attention to it. Whatever it is, it's far away." Carla said.
The roar came back once again, bringing more fear, instilling it into the people on the ship. Carla had her hands placed over Eren and Mikasa's ears so that they didn't have to hear it. She couldn't tell what in this world that sound belonged to, but whatever it was, it didn't come anywhere near.
At the inner gates of Shiganshina, the last of the people that were assumed to have already left had been the final decision to finally start closing the gate. "Close it!" One soldier yelled at the men who were doing their best to close the gate.
"Close the damn gate! They're coming!" Another soldier yelled at those who were putting their strength into operating the gate.
"We're going as fast we can!" One of the other Garrison soldiers said.
Among the frantic rush to close the heavy gate that would seal off any titan contact with the rest of the territory, a horrifying, ear screeching roar stopped everything.
"What...was that?" One of the Garrison soldiers said, then another roar came, hurting the ears of everyone their present, causing it to ring.
"Just shut it!! Or else that spawn of hell will eat us!!" And like that, they rushed back to their progress on the closing of the damn gate that felt like it should've been closed since a while ago.
Outside the titans had already been marching in, their steps being rumbles felt across the city.
Some people, stubborn or not, had already been swallowed, unfortunately. Just before the gate were cannons positioned to target the oncoming titans. A cannon ball would fly and miss.
"Damn it! Just hit it!" One Garrison soldier yelled.
"We can't even aim! I don't know where it will land!!"
"Well, just bring in the next load and hope it lands!" He yelled back as the footsteps became louder and clearer.
Another soldier had come running, with sweat running down, absolute fear in his eyes that just pleaded to leave. "Sir... we don't have anymore... rounds," And then the loud boom, an explosion occurred near, injuring the crew of a cannon nearby.
"Give me a break! Those idiots didn't clean out the residue!"
Another horrifying and familiar roar rampaged the ears of the Garrison troops. From their eyes, it seemed like the world would shake and crumble.
"Shit! Ditch everything, retreat! Shiganshina is lost!" One of the Garrison troops said as he ran to what should be the safety of Wall Maria's territory.
Everyone had the same idea, if the screams and roars weren't enough, the titans that were ever so present, stomping down with their massive feet, approaching the humans was also there as well, the much more clear issue.
They had begun running towards the gate while it had been closing, slowly descending it's way to the ground to seal the district off. If there was anyone else left behind, may whatever deity or being they worshipped had mercy on them that their deaths wouldn't be so cruel.
The vast land and safety of being inside the outer wall was within reach, their breaths being heavy, making every step as they ran count, until a light more bright and powerful than anything possible encompassed everything, rivaling that of the sun.
A powerful shockave erupted and sent everything small flying, humans closer to what was the blast would've been atomized while others who'd still hope to get on the boats or were retreating were thrown hard, crashing into the ground.
Besides the light, a cloud of dirt and dust took place in the immediate area around the area of the blast.
"Help!!," people pleaded, "I can't see!!" Others said, "Someone save us!!" They cried out.
Far away, on the ship, being pulled by river railways
Eren had seemed to calm down, with Mikasa and Carla both watching over him. But he still seemed traumatized.
"Eren..." Carla spoke to him in a soft voice. She stared down at her boy. The life in him almost seemed drained out. That is, until she caught a bright flash in his eyes, next thing, people rushed to the back of the ship and pointed in the direction of where that light came from.
Mikasa and Carla looked up and saw the source of what caused the commotion on board. How it sat and shined across the afternoon, it seemed magnificent. If one was oblivious, but that wasn't the case, that light came straight from around Shiganshina.
Mikasa felt something was off. She moved from where she sat and sat next to Eren to put one arm on him as if to shield him. Carla picked up on this and had done so as well.
A shockwave came, only being just a small punch of air to the people ruffling their hair at most. Eren's eyes moved towards where that shockwave came from, if there was anything he knew, it was that his home town wouldn't look the same again if he were to ever come back to it, one day.
Outside of Wall Maria
There, just slightly beyond Shiganshina's gate, was the site of what seemed like as if someone tested a massive thermonuclear bomb.
The ground had changed from its appealing green to a depressing brown.
In the middle was a crater, more or less a small one, and there, was the mechanical being, the Drill titan, who laid on the ground, seemingly unconscious.
"Steve? Steve!!"
