"Lumos!" - a small beam of light was born at the tip of your wand, illuminating your footsteps. The view flashed right in front of your eyes - Glorious Hogwarts stood among the pulsing lightning and the shivery weather.
The enchanted school grounds were no strangers to the wet soil and extensive puddles that accompanied your boots, welcoming splashes from the bursting down rain.
A black satchel draped over your shoulder as your drenched, black robes clothed you inside the soothing office of Albus Dumbledore. Professor flicked his wand and a pair of red porcelain teacups flew over to the table.
"Tea?" - he asked, stretching his hand towards the hovering in the air, incoming, silver teapot. As you nodded it tilted, greeting you with a delightful, sweet aroma, traveling alongside the brown, warm liquid into each of the teacups.
As you lifted it up to your lips and took a sip, you glared into Albus's blue eyes "I know why I'm here, professor. And I must really apologize about my owl almost getting caught... But you were very brief with me in the letter and I must ask - why me?"
Dumbledore folded his fingers, ignoring the huffing of his tea beside his hands "Taking such interest in defence against the dark arts, accomplishing achievements greater than any other would at your age, I see you as one of the most suitable for the task."
"My achievements just sound greater than they are. I cannot take full credit since I've had help. What if I am the wrong person to ask? Surely, there must be someone else out there more capable." - you lowered your glossy eyes to the table
"You do not trust yourself." - Dumbledore said "But I must assure you, after meeting you once again, I can see in you what you yet do not see in yourself. You are wise and alerted. You would know exactly what to expect from Riddle and be able to see through his deceit. You'd keep a closer watch, better than what I've done in my years."
"So what would you like me to accomplish?"
"Get close to him. Close enough to reveal his plans and secrets. Use that, if you can, against him. Do anything in your power that could save all lives he took over the years"
"That's a very difficult thing to ask" - you replied "We both know his heart is not in the right place. And he is not as foolish to simply reveal everything to a stranger. And even if I was successful, what should I do after?"
"That much would be for you to figure out"
"This plan sounds like a blind man attempting to ride a broom -- Set up for failure"
"It would be foolish to assume otherwise" - Albus's voice soothed "But there is a chance."
"How great of a chance?"
"It matters how careful you ought to be. I have faith you will do well. If I had none, I would not request you to be here."
"So..." - you felt the color drain from your lips, realizing how complicated everything was "You want me to throw my current life away... to change his mind? Change him?"
"Yes." - he folded back his sleeve, shifting your attention towards his shriveled fingers - blackened as if they were decaying. "I will not be here for long I'm afraid. I need to be sure Harry receives all the help he needs this very moment. But within each second we talk, one breath somewhere withers by the hands of the dark lord. You are one of my last resorts to save Harry. Neither one can live while the other one survives and when the time comes, the boy must die."
"This wouldn't be just for the boy, professor. I would save any spilled muggle blood as much as I would save magical blood."
"Of course." - Dumbledore nodded "Another reason why I think the task will work is because Tom was never born a monster. You see, his mother passed away shortly after his birth, she had no choice but to leave Riddle in an orphanage as his father refused to take any part in their lives. Merope thought if she stopped giving him love potion - and confessed that they both are about to have a son - that her loved one will remain by her side. But she could not have been more wrong."
"But this means - if he is a child of a love potion - that he is just a result of imagination." - you replied "It's common knowledge that these conceived children do not feel any love nor affection."
"Yes, indeed. But so many careless wizards and witches have taken such drastic methods that luckily, a new type of brewed potion has come to existence" - he twirled his wand and his cupboard's door swung open. He stretched sideways his arm and a small vial with some sort of violet liquid flew into his hand and he quickly gripped it. "Here." - he handed it to you "When the time is right, introduce this potion as a drink. Make sure he drinks it all or else it will not work. If he does consume it, all the effects of him being conceived under a love potion will disappear. He will finally be vulnerable to such emotions as love."
As you took it, your eyes darted from the vial to his wrinkled face "And this will work?"
"Tom Riddle grew to be Voldemort not just because of the love potion. He never even felt the warmth of a mother. If he had, perhaps he would have grown to become different. But due to his given circumstances, he spent his adolescence using and terrorizing anyone he wished to. If he does any of the sort to you or even if it will be the opposite, and he will be friendly - then it is not because he wants to be your friend but because he has found a use of you. With the help of this potion, you need to teach him otherwise."
"And If I fail to present the potion, he might grow tired of me eventually getting into his business all the time and he will cut me off realizing he won't need me anymore."
Dumbledore gave you a nod "We have little choice. You have the power now to change the future. Prevent women from becoming widows and children from having to live as orphans. Remind strangers that trusting will not cost them their lives." - his voice lowered "And in this universe, you will still have your parents. Safe and untouched. You will get to see them once again. Alive."
"And if nothing works out it will all be on my shoulders." - you added "I do not think I could bear in losing my family twice."
"Do not let those thoughts cloud you. Remember, as one light fades; another begins"
"What if I get stuck back in time?"
"If everything will turn out well, I see no reason for you to still want to be here."
You paused, tucking away the vial into your pocket "I'll do it. For my parents and the other innocent people."
"Excellent." - he smiled "Now, there is another thing." - his wand twitched again and another vial flew over but this time, it landed straight on top of your palm. "Will bring you back a few years, to the age of 16."
"I've never heard of this type of potion. Is it even... legal?"
"I'm afraid not." - he folded his arms behind his back "This potion is a rarity. It is incredibly difficult to brew. This sort of magic is not to be abused and will have to remain between us. Only a pinch of sorcerers are aware of it."
You inhaled, popping off the lid of the vial "Cheers, professor" - as you drank it until the vial was fully empty, you frowned at the flavor "Tastes like rotten prawns and piss" - you rubbed some drops off your lips "Quite similar to polyjuice"
You felt yourself grow heavy, as if gravity was weighing you down harder than ever. You had no orientation of your surroundings as your vision became so blurry you could hardly see the texture of the floor.
When your head stopped feeling as if it spun, you straightened and your vision steadily came back "I can see why it's a rarity" - you gulped
He then took something out of a sealed drawer - pendant of some sort "This... is a time turner. An advanced one." - he said with great wonder in his voice "Use it wisely, as it will bring you back in time for a lot longer than a normal one would. However. You will still collide with your old self if you were there to exist at the same time. So you shall not go back in time twice to the same place as your body always remains." - he handed it to you and you secured it around your neck "Make sure nobody sees it as it's a very demanded, unique object. Guard it with your soul."
"I will, professor. You have my word, I will give everything my best try."
"And I know you'll do a marvelous job.: - Albus replied "Do not tell him you are a descendant. Not straight away at least. It might create conflict if not even a scandal. He'll see you as less of an ally and more of an enemy or a competition if the timing is wrong" - his face turned weary "You will have to do something to draw his interest. You don't want him assuming you are like everyone else. It is obligatory to stand out. If you have to, be even disobedient."
Your parents had you at a very late age and you felt excited about going back to your parents again since you've barely visited them back then, being overwhelmed with everything else that went down at the time. This was a chance to change that.
"I'll have it in mind and I will, thank you, sir. I will present myself as a transfer from Ilvermorny."
"Yes, do so." - he looked around, his face fatigued. His serious gaze then pierced you through his half-moon glasses "I think this is it. Unfortunately, if you'll have a big impact, I'm afraid we will not be as acquainted anymore. You won't be able to hear a report from me. But just know, if there is a difficult situation, trust yourself and act on what you will feel is the right thing to do. Improve your reputation, he will be intrigued."
"I will keep it in mind."
"Now, you have the necklace, you know the year and you know what to do. Best of luck I wish towards your journey. I know you can do it."
"Thanks for believing in me sir, it was a pleasure to see you again." - with a flick of your wand, the little ball representing time started to rotate inside your necklace. You glanced at the professor one last time "Farewell, sir."
He nodded as he watched you disappear out of sight along with the rotating ball.
You traveled back in time, watching every single item in the office that has been previously changed transfigure. The room has differed a lot over the years and it was switching right in front of your eyes. Finally, the pendant stopped rotating and you were left in the old, bright office of Albus Dumbledore. Alone.
