On an empty, thin staircase in Hogwarts' tower, next to some barred windows, with his hands crossed behind his back, Tom Riddle gazed into the outside.
He could sense a figure stand behind him and confirmation was given away by the glass reflecting your furious face.
"You must think it was me" - He looked at your reflection before turning around to speak directly eye to eye "My hatred for Mudbloods must have been a trail for you to follow."
"You're saying you're innocent? You dare to look me in the eye right now and tell me you had nothing to do with it?"
"It's up to you what you have faith in. You know I will share no condolence to the ones hurt" - he replied "Besides" - he smirked "I have been with you the whole time. How do you assume I could of done it?"
It certainly wasn't the time nor the place for you to tell him that you knew all about the basilisk and the chamber of secrets, which was probably what was happening now. In the past Tom has terrorised many Muggle borns but none of them died except for one girl called Myrtle who was still alive. If there was anything you wanted to start changing - it was her death, maybe you could even prevent it.
But for now you had to bite your tongue and keep your mouth shut in order to save a life in the future.
Lily clearly hasn't passed away, she was just stiff like stone. She wasn't dead nor alive. Same with the girl before. The nurse has already been preparing a potion to help with the state which was hoped to work like a charm.
"You're right." - you hated to act dumb "How could you have possibly done it." - you kept your fists clenched as you lowered your eyes to the ground "You were in the library the whole time..."
Tom was satisfied, he was delighted at the thought that he had fooled you. However, little did he know you were the one fooling him.
***********************
It's been a week since Lily's incident. The school took it as serious as to setting up curfews, demanding the staff to duty the halls and keep a close watch on the students. Some people thought it was the work of Mortier Hollow, however, you suspected no other but the infamous Riddle who you personally kept a close watch on.
Oddly, he thought you were making friendship. He was starting to open up, slowly, even if it wasn't about his dark side, he was talking about himself. Tom seemed to develop a positive side which he preferred to show only you. Sometimes he would carry your books for you. Sometimes he would help you with your work, open the doors and agree in disliking whoever you disliked. The attention slowly attracted you as if a magnet. Not only he was attractive but he was also acting like a gentleman.
However, there was a very high possibility that he put your friend in the hospital. You had to be cautious therefore you kept your suspicions. But it was getting harder and harder the more you got to know him.
Eventually he stopped fighting your touches. He would let you place your hand around his arm and shoulder from time to time.
---
Christmas was coming and the students were allowed to leave Hogwarts to go and celebrate with their families.
Outside one of the classrooms, without being noticed, you eavesdropped on a conversation between Tom Riddle and Albus Dumbledore.
"Professor, if you'd let me, I'd like to stay here" - you recognised Toms' voice
"I'm sorry, Mr. Riddle, but I cannot. Those are the rules, no student is allowed to stay during the holidays"
"If you could talk to someone..." - he gulped "Hogwarts is my home, I got nowhere to go" - there was a hint of sadness in his voice. He knew he was all alone and maybe for the first time since the potion, he started to care about it.
"I'm afraid it's out of my power, Mr. Riddle."
You could hear the footsteps of Albus as he left Tom. Riddle was disappointed, standing still in his place.
"Trouble in paradise?" - you came out of the corner, approaching him
"Eavesdropping?"
"Always" - you smiled, nodding
"I just don't wish to go back to the orphanage."
"Maybe you don't have to." - you smiled, watching him get confused "Come celebrate Christmas with me and my family."
You couldn't believe your own words. You just invited the man who kills your parents in the future to celebrate Christmas with them.
"I do not belie-----"
You cut him off "Come on. It sounds better than the orphanage, right?"
"Will there be muggles?" - he raised an eyebrow in consideration
"Possibly." - you grabbed his arm "But there will be sorcerers. Just join us."
Tom paused silently before replying "I suppose it won't do any harm..."
"Great!" - you jumped up and down in cheer "I'll send an owl saying that you're coming."
What a fortune that in this universe they will not know one another and in this universe you'll actually spend Christmas with your family instead of missing it like you used to.
