When Saturday morning came, you and Lily changed into regular clothes and left for the cobblestone shopping area for wizards and witches - Diagon Alley.
"You sure you'll have enough sickles for the supplies?" - the ginger girl asked you as she looked down at the fragment of paper she clenched between her fingertips. It was a list of needed equipment.
"I should be alright, I have a pouch full of galleons"
"You keep them with you at all times I hope" - she glanced at the black satchel around your shoulder "There are thieves, you know. And for your sake, I hope you won't come across a niffler."
"Oh, those things are adorable"
"Yeah until they steal a watch your friend bought you."
"Must have been one shiny watch"
"It was my favourite" - she pouted
"So can I get a pet then?" - you pointed at the list in her hands
"Yep. You can choose between an owl, a toad or a cat. Which one would you like?"
"A snake."
"A snake?!" - Lily's eyes bloated "D-Did you not hear the selection?"
"I did but I want to get a snake."
"But they're not permitted, you'll get into trouble"
"I guess we'll just have to wait and see about that. If the headmaster will ask me - I'll return or give it away."
"Alright.." - she lowered the list
"I also want to get a rabbit."
"A rabbit??" - her voice quivered
"Preferably white and fluffy with long ears"
"A rabbit and a snake..." - she murmured "What made you think it's a good idea to keep the two together?"
"Well snakes are awesome pets. They're mostly quiet and don't require daily walks. And rabbits are adorable."
"But you have to take care of them, you know." - concerned, Lily said
"That's the same with every pet."
Another reason why you wanted these animals was because a snake would capture Tom's attention since he is speaks parseltongue. And a rabbit could play a part as a decoy.
"I don't know" - she glimpsed down "Two pets that are against the school's rules?"
"That's the fun of it, it is against the rules" - you playfully told her
"Well... Alright... If that's what you want..." - she murmured, obviously displeased.
"So you'll help me?"
She sighed "Okay... fine. I know a place."
She led you into a pet shop of three floors. There were all sorts of pets from mammals to amphibians. Eventually, out of the hundreds that were there, you chose your final two pets.
There it was, a greyish white rabbit, its tiny, glossy eyes looking right at you, laying on top of its warm, little blanket.
Lily was immediately charmed by the enchanting cuteness and innocence of the small bunny.
"It's so adorable!" - Lily squealed as she stroked its fluffy fur
Once you were happy with the rabbit, you chose the snake. A Black and yellow Mangrove.
Lily seemed to tremble as the snake hissed at her and she appeared concerned again "Just keep it away from my bed."
"It won't go near it" - you reassured her
"You do realize that thing could devour your rabbit if you're not careful, right?"
"Well I'm not buying the rabbit as its food, am I?" - you replied "Just relax, Lily, It'll be alright."
You left the store happy with your purchase. Lily carried a little, black cage with the calm bunny inside of it, and you were carrying a different cage with the snake in it.
"This is such a bad idea" - Lily said
"Everything will be fine, I promise."
"I've never broken any rules before... it's just..." - she sighed "Give me some time to adjust." - she shook her head, changing thoughts "Let's just get everything else we need."
You bought books next, which included "Fantastic beasts and where to find them" by Newt Scamander and "Defensive magical theory" by Wilbert Slinkhard bought from Flourish & Blotts
And then you were searching for a stationary shop.
"There!" - Lily yelled, pointing at the shop with the name 'Amanuensis Quills' written on the sign at the top of the door.
You both spent minutes inside, picking out what you needed. When you and Lily split between tables, you could hear her voice from the other side of the short shelves
"You're following me now?" - she scoffed
You looked her way and noticed the boy from the other day, his round glasses reflected the bitter frown on Lily's face
"No." - James bluntly replied "Me and Sirius are looking for brooms. For quidditch?"
"This is a quill shop." - Lily glowered "I believe you're looking for 'Broomstix' on the other side of the street. Or is it so difficult to spot a bunch of wood and sticks outside a shop now?"
When you neared them, you noticed Sirius Black puff his chest, his eyebrows twitching upwards "Hi, <___>"
"Sirius, you're shopping today too? What a coincidence"
"Indeed." Lily shrewdly intervened as she glared coldly at James "If you'll excuse us, we have actually important matters to complete."
When you and Lily left the boys and blended with the clustered wizards on the cobblestone street, after making sure they hadn't followed, you curiously told her
"You seemed quite harsh back there"
"It's just James." - she groaned, her hands twitching as if she was about to claw onto thin air "He has the nerve to ask me out and then proceed to bully Snape. What a vile, arrogant--" - she suddenly dropped quiet, as if containing herself
"It's okay, he'll grow out of this immaturity eventually."
When you bought everything you needed, you returned to Hogwarts. Lily, Molly and Mary helped you with sorting your stuff before the four of you agreed to hang out in the courtyard to relax.
You deliberately slipped the idea of going into the courtyard specifically, as on the way back, you spotted Tom seated against a tree and reading something.
Molly, just like Lily, felt concerned about your new pets. Mary, on the other hand, was more than fascinated by your bravery at keeping forbidden pets and vouched to keep it a secret as long as she'd gain custody of either of the animals whenever she'd want it.
Outside in the yard, you took the snake out of the cage and casually laid it around your shoulders. You held the mangrove snake with a tight, careful grip - it was still a dangerous creature.
Next to you, Mary had insisted on carrying the rabbit in her hands. She squeezed it and would pet it for solace.
Meanwhile, Molly carried the cloth to sit on and Lily carried a basket with the food. You were all set for a nice picnic among the fresh air.
You then heard a startled, loud, feminine shriek. Clearly, someone had a frightful reaction towards the creature on you.
"Freak." - one girl stated as she looked at the black and yellow snake's eyes.
"Don't listen to them" - Lily whispered
"I couldn't care less anyway" - you told her
In the courtyard, Mary laid down the cloth flat at the very exact spot that you picked out, which was near Tom, but far enough from making him assume you were stalking.
You faced him diagonally from the front, able to catch glimpses at him if you needed to. Molly then set down the basket and sorted out the food.
"Make sure your new pets don't snatch our snacks" - Molly glimpsed at the snake
"Oh they won't" - you glanced at her then back at the focused on his book Tom "There are other plans"
