The governor and police commissioner looked down at the three of us, their faces dark with fury.
"What the hell is going on here?"
After landing, the governor took one look at his banged-up son and hauled ass to the hospital. Meanwhile, the commissioner stood there grilling all three of us.
I was practically collapsing. That brick Garrett threw plus Bridget's kicks from before—now that I was coming down, the pain hit me like a freight train.
The only thing keeping me conscious was pure rage.
I hadn't even said a word yet, but Bridget started throwing me under the bus:
"Commissioner, I'm reporting Harper! She exposed our sniper position due to her own screw-ups, nearly compromising the rescue operation. Afterward, she tried to threaten me to keep my mouth shut, locked me on the rooftop, and wanted to kill me!"
"Plus she kept trying to provoke the hostage-taker on purpose—she had it out for everyone!"
I didn't immediately fire back. Instead, I turned to look at Garrett.
He gave me one cold glance, then said:
"Commissioner, everything happened exactly as Bridget described. It was all due to Harper's mistakes."
The commissioner had known me for years. He looked down at me and asked:
"Harper, you're not usually this careless or prone to mistakes. Tell me what really went down."
I swallowed the blood pooling in my mouth, then spoke in a weak voice:
"Bridget kept pissing off the perp on purpose, messing up our whole rescue plan. She sabotaged my sniper nest, blew our cover, then literally put her hand over my scope when I tried to take the shot."
"Everything's documented. I was wearing a body cam, all the radio traffic's on record, and I've got it all on video."
With that, I pulled out my phone that I'd positioned on the rooftop, disguised within my sniper setup. It had captured everything from Bridget kicking down the rooftop door to Garrett flying at me with that brick.
"I'm also charging Team Leader Cross with misconduct and reckless endangerment. His shitty commands kept making things worse—he threw all of us under the bus just to protect Bridget. I demand a full probe!"
The commissioner stared at me for a moment. That's when Garrett, who'd been silent, suddenly stepped forward.
"Harper, have you lost your damn mind? What kind of crazy bullshit are you spouting?"
"Sorry about this, Commissioner. She's obviously traumatized from the shooting and the mistakes she made—she's having some kind of breakdown."
I held up my phone and the audio storage unit from my earpiece, handing them to the commissioner.
"Commissioner, whether what I'm saying is true or not—just take a look."
The commissioner took the devices, and Garrett's face went pale. He tried to play it off like he didn't care.
I had no idea what expression would cross the commissioner's face when he saw this evidence, but I knew it wouldn't be pretty. After all, Garrett was his hand-picked promotion.
Meanwhile, Bridget still thought we'd just rescued some random kid.
"Listen up, Harper—don't get too cocky. Garrett and I have connections all through the department, even up at the state level. Tomorrow we'll have people get you kicked out of here."
"Enjoy your last day of acting tough. Tomorrow, after we pull our strings, you'll never work in this city again!"
I didn't have the energy to argue with them anymore. I found an ambulance and climbed in.
