The next day, the commissioner's results weren't in yet, but social media had already exploded.
I was just trying to scroll through my phone to relax when a headline smacked me in the face:
#SWAT Team Corruption: Incompetent Sniper Gets Key Position, Nearly Gets Hostage Killed!
#Police Department Deadweight
Suddenly the entire platform was flooded with insults and humiliation directed at me.
Everyone was calling me a pretty face, a slut who slept her way to the top.
They used every vicious word they could think of to describe me, rallying others to join in the harassment.
The commissioner said he was still reviewing everything, but had basically confirmed that my account was completely accurate.
Meanwhile, Garrett and Bridget had no clue that the "random kid" was the governor's son.
Wanna play the connections game? Fine. Let's see how far your connections reach, you corrupt pieces of shit!
By the time I was discharged, the online harassment had reached fever pitch, and the commissioner had finished his investigation. Everything I'd said was completely true, and their judgment day was coming.
I'd just finished my discharge paperwork downstairs when Garrett walked over with Bridget clinging to his left arm.
"Harper! Finally getting out, huh? How've you been feeling these past few days?"
I knew he was referring to the online attacks—still trying to twist the knife.
Bridget naturally couldn't pass up the opportunity to gloat:
"Well, well, if it isn't our star sniper! How's it feel getting roasted online? You going crazy yet?"
I smiled and ignored them.
Looking at their intertwined hands, I pulled out my phone and snapped a photo.
Garrett frowned and tried to grab my phone.
"Harper, are you insane? You know this could ruin me! If these photos get out and I get hit with conduct violations, are YOU gonna clean up my mess?"
I smiled and said:
"Obviously I'm not gonna clean up your mess. Besides, your conduct issues are YOUR problem. If you're worried about it, just divorce me!"
Garrett stared at me in disbelief:
"What the hell are you talking about? Are you out of your mind? You want a divorce?"
"It's just one little thing—why are you being so dramatic? Is this your way of trying to get my attention?"
"Someone like you couldn't survive without me anyway!"
Hearing that, I actually laughed.
Before I married Garrett, I was a top graduate from the police academy. During my two years as a detective, I'd solved countless major cases. With my track record, I should've been promoted ages ago.
I was the one who vouched for him to join the SWAT team. I chose to stay on the front lines instead of taking promotions so I could stay with him.
If I hadn't chosen to support him, I would've had much bigger opportunities.
And now he was saying I was nothing without him?
Huh. Guess he'd gotten too comfortable and forgotten reality.
I pulled out the divorce papers my lawyer had prepared and set them in front of him.
"That's right, Garrett. Let's getting divorced."
"Here are the divorce papers. Sign them."
Garrett's hand holding the papers started shaking.
"You're actually serious about this?"
I didn't even bother looking at him, just kept packing my hospital room stuff:
"Of course. When have I ever lied to you?"
"And just so we're clear—I want you to walk away with NOTHING!"
Both Garrett and Bridget started yelling at me:
"Why the hell should he get nothing?"
I waved my phone in front of them:
"Because of this—fresh evidence of your affair. Or would you prefer I show you the security footage from our house?"
They both knew exactly what they'd been doing at our place while I was in the hospital.
I'd lost every ounce of love for Garrett the moment he deliberately got me killed in my past life.
Garrett spoke through gritted teeth:
"I'm NOT signing this. I'm not walking away with nothing!"
I shrugged:
"No problem. My lawyer will convince you in court."
Hearing that, Garrett's frown deepened:
"Can't we just... not get divorced?"
