The immigration interview went smooth as butter. Visa approved on the spot.
"Book me the earliest flight tomorrow."
"Miss, you sure you want to rush like this?"
"The sooner the better."
When I got home, my key wouldn't work. They'd changed the damn locks.
"Save yourself the trouble. I had all the locks changed."
Chloe sauntered out of the house.
"Who the hell said you could do that?"
Dad bought me this house. Who gave her the right?
"My fiancé, duh. The actual owner now. And FYI, not just this room—the whole house and everything in it is mine."
"You didn't seriously think this was still your place, right?"
Alex couldn't wait to kick me out.
Chloe whipped out a jewelry box and popped it open.
"Rich girl stuff really does look expensive."
"Give that back!"
"No can do. Alex already gave it to me."
"He had no right!"
I lunged for it.
"Keep the rest, but that bracelet was my mom's... give it back!"
That bracelet was the last birthday gift Mom gave me before she died. The most important thing I owned.
"Oops, looks fragile." Chloe dangled it over the balcony.
"Stop!"
My heart nearly exploded.
We fought over it and the bracelet went flying.
CRASH!
The sound of jade shattering echoed through the house.
I practically threw myself down the stairs.
The bracelet lay shattered. My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I tried to gather the pieces.
Sharp jade sliced my fingers, leaving tiny wounds everywhere.
My chest felt like my fingertips—full of stabbing pain.
"What happened?"
Alex was back.
"Alex, my mom's bracelet... it's broken."
I was on my knees, tears soaking the carpet.
When Mom died, Alex held me through the worst of it. He knew what this meant to me.
Alex knelt beside me.
"Jesus, how?"
"Look, I know this master craftsman. We can take it to him, get it fixed, okay?"
"Really?"
I looked up at him desperately.
If I could get Mom's bracelet repaired, nothing else mattered.
"Trust me. Hey, stop crying. You're a mess."
Footsteps came rushing down the stairs.
"Alex, Evelyn said I didn't deserve you and tried to kick me out! Then she was like 'if I can't have it, nobody can' and chucked the bracelet!"
"No! I didn't!"
I frantically shook my head.
Alex stood up slowly, his doubt cutting through me.
Chloe rolled up her sleeve.
"She... she hit me too."
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
My ring had left a mark on her arm from our struggle.
"That was because she—"
"Lying, violence, playing victim. Evelyn, what the hell happened to you?"
Alex stared at me with complete disappointment.
"Evelyn, you're fucking twisted. Using your dead mom to manipulate me and frame Chloe."
"I'm not lying!"
He ripped the broken jade from my hands.
"You'd even use your dead mother's stuff to play victim. You're disgusting."
He stormed toward the garden.
Alex walked fast. I stumbled after him, tripping over planters, scraping my knees on the stone.
"Stop! Give it back! That was my mother's!"
I caught up and clawed at him.
I accidentally scratched his neck, drawing blood.
Alex backhanded me across the face.
"Have you lost your fucking mind? What is wrong with you!"
He actually hit me?
Since coming back, I just wanted to get away from them.
Didn't want his love, didn't care about the house.
Why were they still torturing me?
"Chloe stole from me! She broke Mom's bracelet! How dare you hit me? How dare you blame me without even listening!"
"Still lying to my face. When did you become such a good actress?"
"God, you disappoint me."
Alex held the bracelet high.
Then threw it into the garden fountain.
"No!"
I jumped in without thinking. The freezing water shocked my system, made me gasp.
But it was a flowing fountain. The broken jade disappeared instantly.
"Why are you doing this to me?"
I collapsed in the icy water, shivering.
"Your dad's not here to teach you manners. Guess that's on me now."
"Buy Chloe twenty pieces of jewelry as compensation, or you'll never see me again."
I watched him walk away.
Water dripped down my face—couldn't tell if it was from the fountain or my eyes.
