Looking at his pale face, my heart ached. "Phoenix, you need to leave. I can handle this myself."
He'd been sickly since childhood, rarely leaving home, let alone fighting off two thugs.
Sure enough, Phoenix was quickly overwhelmed and kicked to the ground.
Senna frowned. "Who the hell is this random guy? Deal with him too."
Watching Phoenix struggle to get up and shield me even while bleeding on the ground, I couldn't help but shout:
"Senna, that's Caspian's uncle! You hurt him, and the Hartwell family will destroy you!"
A flicker of hesitation crossed Senna's face before she shrugged dismissively. "I've never heard of Caspian having an uncle. Even if he does, look at this weakling—probably some family disappointment."
"You really think the Hartwells would come after me, the real Cross heiress, over this nobody? Get real. Besides, once you're both dead, I'll be the one telling the story."
Phoenix was beaten half to death, and I was tied up tight, completely helpless.
I glared at Senna. "I don't know why you think I stole your identity, but I am absolutely a Cross. I could forgive everything you've done before, but if Phoenix gets hurt, I swear I'll make you beg for death!"
Senna suddenly looked at me with pity and burst into laughter. "God, Seraphina, you really won't give up till you're in your grave, will you? Makes sense—after twenty years of luxury, why would you admit you were switched at birth?"
"But denying it won't change anything. I already got a DNA test. I'm definitely the Cross heiress!"
I stared at her in shock.
DNA test? How was that even possible?
My parents died years ago. The Cross family was just me and my brother—how could Senna possibly be related to us?
But there was no time to ask questions.
The thugs dragged Phoenix and me to the river's edge.
This river was hundreds of feet deep. Anyone who fell in was dead.
I kept looking around desperately, hoping my brother would show up, searching for any chance to escape.
Senna caught on to my thoughts and giggled sweetly. "Still trying to run? You're so disobedient. Go break her legs before you throw her in."
One thug picked up a metal pipe and walked toward me.
Phoenix, blood streaming down his face, used his last bit of strength to tackle the other thug. "Seraphina, run! I'll hold them off!"
"I'm gonna beat you to death, you wannabe hero!" The punk completely lost it, raising the pipe high above Phoenix's head.
Just then, a car screeched to a stop in front of us.
"Anyone who doesn't want to die better freeze right now!"
