Seeing the familiar face of our family's head of security step out of the car, I finally felt my heart settle.
The Cross family had arrived.
The thugs were immediately restrained, and Senna started screaming: "Who are you people? What do you want with me? I'm the Cross family heiress!"
Before she could finish, one of the security team knocked her out with a swift chop to the neck.
The head of security said they'd take everyone who hurt me to the warehouse. What happened to them was completely up to me.
And Phoenix and I were rushed to the hospital.
The doctors said I just had some cuts and bruises—nothing serious.
Phoenix was in much worse shape. He'd taken a serious blow to the head and needed to stay for treatment.
Not until he came out of surgery and was wheeled into a room did I finally start to relax.
I borrowed a nurse's phone to call my brother and let him know I was okay.
When my brother heard that someone had claimed I wasn't really a Cross and tried to kill me, he was livid:
"If I didn't have this crucial meeting I can't leave, I would've gone with security to handle this myself."
I quickly reassured him. "It's fine. Send security back to you—you need protection. Just leave a few bodyguards here with me."
"Oh, and one more thing—I don't want to marry Caspian anymore. I'm in love with his uncle."
My brother was shocked at first, then laughed. "Thank God you finally came to your senses. I could tell that boy was worthless from day one."
"Since you're done with him, starting today, I'm pulling all the resources our family gave them. Let him learn what happens when you mess with my sister."
After we hung up, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.
Whether in my past life or this one, Caspian had disappointed me completely.
He only had eyes for his childhood friend Senna, throwing away years of our relationship to humiliate me.
Getting a second chance at life, I definitely wouldn't let Caspian off easy this time.
But I never expected that before I could settle the score with him, he'd come straight to me.
His face was twisted with rage as he raised his hand and slapped me hard across the face.
"Seraphina Cross, you've lost your goddamn mind! Wasn't stealing twenty years of Senna's life enough? Now you're getting people to hurt her! When Mr. Cross finds out the truth, he'll destroy you! Fine, you wanna screw yourself over, but don't drag me down with you!"
The slap left a metallic taste flooding my mouth.
I slapped him right back and gave him a mocking smile.
"She says she's the Cross heiress and you just believe her? You two grew up together—does she look anything like my brother?"
Caspian frowned impatiently. "Stop making excuses. Senna already got a DNA test."
He paused, then added with fake concern, "Look, I get it—you don't wanna give up the Cross family lifestyle. Here's the deal: hand over your identity to Senna like a good girl, and I'll take care of you. I can't give you the Hartwell name, but I promise you'll live just as well as you did with the Cross family."
Senna really did a DNA test with my brother?
But how the hell did she get his genetic material?
I was full of questions and about to ask when Senna's voice rang out.
"Seraphina Cross!"
Caspian shook his head helplessly. "You hurt Senna, so of course she wants payback. Just get on your knees and apologize. For old times' sake, I'll put in a good word for you."
I was shocked to see Senna, and even more shocked by the bodyguard following behind her.
I instinctively asked, "Who told you to let her out?"
The bodyguard walked up to me and kicked me hard in the shin.
I dropped to my knees, but he wasn't done—he slapped me across the face several times.
"You little fake, still trying to act like some princess in front of me? You got a death wish!"
My head was ringing from the beating. The bodyguard looked at me with pure disgust, like he really believed I was some imposter.
I struggled to speak. "Didn't security tell you when he came? Everything Senna said was bullshit."
The bodyguard snorted. "Miss Senna is the real Cross heiress. You're really committed to this act, aren't you?"
Senna waved her hand, and the bodyguard immediately stepped back respectfully.
She glanced coldly at the wounds on my face, then turned to Caspian:
"Caspian, your girlfriend didn't just steal my life—she got two thugs to hurt me. Lucky our bodyguard showed up in time."
"I just wanna know—as her boyfriend, how are you gonna handle this?"
